Every health care system works at capacity. Add in a wild card like this, and it could easily get out of hand.
Exactly.
The system has always worked with very little excess capacity. They have enough to handle normal seasonal spikes, and limited localized emergencies, but even at that, the seasonal flu can easily overtax resources during a bad year.
Right now, we have this, compounded by an already worse-than-normal seasonal flu.

Time will tell.
time is already telling here in Italy... a month ago we thought is a chinese problem... three weeks ago we thought is a single little area here in italy problem.... two weeks ago europe thought we in italy were just a bunch of reckless idiots while they were the wise and so they should continue laugthing at us... now they are in the shit up to the nostrils too... and are trying to take us as an example, but it's already late.
this virus is a bad BAD beast....
politicians are always shy in taking strong positions against it because they will be unpopular... so every lockdown will be late against the needs.
My advice is better sorry than worry... or toilet paper will be not your main problem

ps.. sorry if in my poor english I'm not able to make the situation clear to you.

New Zealand govt has told people over 70 to stay at home and not go out.
My old man is pissed off because they cancelled the rugby so he has nothing to watch on tv and cant go to the pub either

Your English is excellent. We are seeing awful footage of what the hospitals are going through. Those medical workers are real heroes. But it doesn’t look like that effort can go on much longer.

I haven't looked into the Italy situation other than the numbers. But it safe to say that with an older population like they have + an overwhelmed healthcare system equals unfortunate news.
Our system, at least where the virus starts to spread , was not overwhelmed at all.
quite different in the south of Italy.. but here in the north ( I'm from milan ) we have ( or had ) top notch healthcare system.
just the virus is spreding so fast that our intensive care units where not enough. In a couple of weeks they alredy doubled it... and still building new facilities to take care of the worst cases.. but it's a run against time as the virus is VERY contagious and is spreading fast,.. no matter how you try to keep it in control...

As I say the situation is evolving so fast that they are trying hard to catch it..... next week will be the clue... the result of lockdown issued two weeks ago should start to show from now on..
To be honest I'm worried about the situation in the south of our nation, as they are not in big trouble yet and population there is a little "naive".. so quite difficult to make them strictly observe the lockdown... I hope to demonstrate me wrong but I worry that two or three weeks from now we'll have to face a new "disaster" there.

We have our own young people still partying, lining up for video games, congregating in parking lots...they feel invincible, but they don’t understand they could keep the pandemic going.

How are you feeling Rox?

I got this Mucinex extreme sinus and decongestant, and wow, really helpful! Thursday night I felt like someone shot me through the roof of my mouth and that it excited through my cheek and I could not sleep at all. Last night I got some sleep. The pain has been reduced a good 65% I'd say.

I do still have one of the worst sore throats I've ever had and am still coughing. But, I'm on the upswing. I may not be back to normal for another week, but I'll get there :)

For live updates from around the Puget Sound area:

Current Lockdown Situation:

Gov. Jay Inslee isn’t mandating a “shelter in place” order for Washington. Yet. In a news conference Friday afternoon, Inslee again pleaded with people to stay home, and hinted that the state could move to more stringent measures if people do not comply.

“We’re making a day-to-day assessment of the date that affects Washington state,” Inslee said when asked why he has not ordered citizens to shelter in place. “We are starting to look at what that would look like if we had to make that decision.”

All bars, restaurants and casinos were closed in Montana. Can still get take out, no dine in. The gas stations can’t serve hot deli items anymore. Small local grocery store has plenty of food. No lettuce, low on eggs but other than that normal.

Wish they would shut down air travel. That’s a big problem. People are still flying around like it’s cool.

Not many people are flying. I flew three flights yesterday, 3 passengers on the first flight, 12 on the second and 6 on the third flight. I got to Kalamazoo last night and am still there because my flight out canceled. Yesterday was my first day back to work since I was on vacation for the last 2 weeks. I really didn't want to be traveling around now, I'd much rather stay home with my family and have less chance of being exposed but apparently I'm part of the critical infrastructure. So I do my job and try to clean my hands often and use a lot of sanitizer and hope for the best. At least I'm still getting a paycheck since my wife lost her job last week.

Anyway it's pretty surreal out there now. The airports are like ghost towns. I've never seen major airports that dead. Downtown Kalamazoo is deserted and so is the hotel, there's only a few other guests besides my crew. I've only left my room to pickup food from the hotel restaurant. Being on the road is completely different than it was 2 weeks ago when I last worked.
