Title says it all! I was going to post this at the recording studio forum but in the end I decided to put it here because the amount of work that went into recording (one afternoon to learn and practice the song and the next day to record it) was miniscule compared to the amount of work doing the restoration.
Cheers! Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing this truly awesome song! :dude:

I was tapping along while listening to this again, since I have drumstick pencils.

:laugh2:

But I got screwed up when it came to the solo and breakdown after the solo. Is that in 7/4 or 7/8 or some other odd timing? I'm counting 7/4.

Wow I really enjoyed the clip and the song - Rush wasn't popular in Australia so a blast from the past. Can I ask without revealing too much - what does a repair job like that cost ballpark and how much time did you have into it?

Thanks for all your contributions here Freddy I find your threads most interesting and informative! :dude:

Great vid! You learned that in a day! I've got to get practicing! Though I have years to go to catch up.

Always enjoy your contributions. I don't know how you have the time to do the work AND share it!

Awesome stuff, Freddy... Just out of interest - was that done with Jammit?

No (Fr)eddy Lee vocals?

If I attempted to sing like Geddy...I'm sure I'd be run out of town :applause:

Guitar solo is in 7/4, then continues in 7/4 when it goes back to the chord hook and ends with one last bar of 2/4 before the vocals come back in. I love the feel of 7/4!

Glad to hear Paul! I won't talk about the cost of this job publicly, let's just say it was not cheap. It took a lot of time!

Well I should clarify...By the time I was 19 years old I new how to play every single rush song that they had released up till then note for note. But I had almost totally forgotten how to play this one except for maybe the main chordal riffs. I had to figure out the solo all over again and I know it's not very close, it gets a little sketchy timing wise in the middle of it...I just didn't have the time to perfect it and I also really wanted to pull the whole song off in one take without stopping. So this was take # 6.

Awesome stuff, Freddy... Just out of interest - was that done with Jammit?

What is jammit? No I used the multitracks (moggs) from those rock band games. I just muted Alex's tracks and stuck mine in there.

Jammit? It works on a similar principle, allowing you to mute various tracks, using the original studio recordings. A bit like karaoke for guitar, bass, drums, vox... everything, really. You can slow the tracks down to practice, look at the notation, etc... Very useful, and they have access to plenty of Rush recordings! Jammit | The Ultimate Music Platform

I hate to sound like a drooling fanboy, but your video is a dream come true.
Outstanding work on all levels, and thank you for taking the time to do it!

If you see someone knocking on your front door, don't run further into the house.
I'm harmless.

I just checked it out Chris, that's very cool! But I'm gonna say something maybe a titch controversial here...I'm kind of glad that I was forced to just use my ears when I was a kid to lift music that I liked. I think I developed deep listening and concentration skills that I probably would not have developed if I had tab and resources like Jammit....just sayin' :hmm:

Thanks Cygnus, but don't worry, I wouldn't act like Geddy when Alex is knocking on his door! (only nerdy rush fans would understand that one):D
I'd invite you in for a coffee if it was before 6 or a martini if it was after! :dude:

Amazing repair as usual and nice playing too, Freddy.

Do those guitars come without nibs? I'd have thought in that price range they'd have them. Also when you were ironing the neck is that meter actually monitoring something like the temperature or anything.

Thanks

Thanks Mr. Teeny!

The owner of the guitar had it refretted before he sent it to me, probably before everything went south...I don't know why, maybe he just liked a really big fret. They are much bigger than the originals. And yes FYI, these guitars have nibs stock.

Correct, I had been monitoring the temperature so that I knew what setting to keep the iron at. In the video shot the temperature probe is no longer on the neck, that's why you see the celcius rate falling.

Got it.
I've had to iron a few fretboards.
As well as steaming neck heels...talk about nerve wracking!

My talents are better spent building amps.
