To me it's also more a question of the amp. Go and buy a 5E3 + use one of your sweetest sounding green pedal and you'll be fine.

    That's nice:

Couldn't agree more, this is a great OD/Distortion pedal with tons of versatility. One of the best pedals I've tried and I've tried a few.

He used a JTM45 on the early albums. A Lead 12 on my heads in Mississippi. A split face Dual Pro on Antenna... On Eliminator he used the Lead 12 as a pre amp into marshall rack amps.

Strats, Teles, Pearly, Gretches, and a bunch of other guitars... I stood there and watched him play a $50 shoe box of an acoustic guitar

And he still sounds like Billy.

What you see on stage has nothing to do with his sound... He has EQ settings to make all of his guitars sound like Pearly.

When I saw ZZ Top in ~'82, Billy played the tiniest electric guitar I'd ever seen. Any idea what that was? It was on the longest guitar strap I've ever see -- he was playing it at his knees.

Odd, that when I saw the OPs question, I automatically thought of my red llama clone, but like another poster, it seems to be my answer to all distortion questions lately due to its versatility and cheap price but I see there are several others here who think the Llama nails that tone in addition to so many other tones IMO

I just got a '57 Tweed I gotta believe that it would be very useful for early BFG tones. Right out of the box, it announces that it wants to go there. The Black '65 can get part of the way there with some tweaking. The Plimsoul doesn't get so close. All IMO, of course. Anyhow, I'd rather listen to a player that evokes well through a Plimsoul than a crappy player that gets the tone just right.

To judge if you're getting close to Rio Grande Mud tones, you need to compare to the original '72 mixes. If you're listening to the '87 mixes, uh, well, enjoy yourself.

The main PG was built by John Bolin. I watched an interview once where Billy said that all of his custom guitars were either made by John Bolin or a builder in Beaumont, Texas. I looked up builders and talked to a few people that said the best luthier in Beaumont is a guy by the name of John Jagneaux...

BTW I had a backstage pass this past June for the Outlaws tour and Billy says he doesn't use pedals but I saw an OCD that was in the rack. Elwood was their and I asked him about it and he said, "Billy doesn't use pedals just amps." I was thinking that maybe Dusty was using an OCD for some of the dirt he gets for his Bass? Or was Billy using it? I mean his clean isn't clean.

Gibbons does use some pedals....There's a good vid with his guitar/rig tech
out there in Youtube land with him...Gibbons himself doesn't control the pedals,
    his tech does....

That vid is a must-watch. Weight-relieved necks, multiple different guitars EQ'd to sound identical, etc. Gibbons has allegedly been known to prank people regarding his gear, and I have to wonder if this vid is another assault. Or not. Crazy.

the rack is pretty much the same as in a book i have from about ten years ago, so i'm thinking it's pretty accurate. he is a bugger for tricking people though, ain't he? :laugh2:
