I just picked up a 2011 Fender MIM Strat in Acrtic White (below) and plan on replacing the stock pickups and wiring. Looking for that SRV Hendrix vibe but I also want some nice chimey Knopfler cleans tones so nothing to hot. Considering the Fender Custom shop AY 69' set, Fender CS 54' set and already talked to Shep and Jared Brandon about getting hand wound pickups from them. I don't care for any of the "noiseless pickups" so no thanks on them. Wondering what your favorite set of Strat pickups are, and why?

I'm looking at grabbing an Arctic White MIM with maple board this week and am very interested in where this thread goes as I will definitely swap the pickups before too long.

my vote is for the CS '69 set. I've got them in a custom build and love 'em. Esp the cleans, beautiful! I can't contrast them to the '54 or Fat 50's set personally, but this video helped me narrow my choice:

Also, on the Strat-Talk forum, people rave about the D Allen pickups, so that might also be worth looking into. Best of luck, but honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices.

I am running the CS 69 AYs in my MIM. I also have a Fralin Blender in the mix. I love a sweet clean sound. That was why I went with the CS 69s. It also has CTS pots and a PIO cap.

I like a nice set of Texas special for versatility. Nice vintage tones in the first 3 postions, and a hot bridge pickup to get those hotter SRV style sounds.

IMHO everyone needs 3 strats at minimum. A white/creme with vintage wounds, a black or red with overwounds, and a sunburst with Texas specials.....

    Then you'll need a seafoam with 54's....

Then something with a humbucker in the bridge.....

    :hmm:

MHD Crooked Halos. No longer in production, but freaking brilliant in my Strat.

Use what Hendrix used, EMGs through a Line6. But seriously, Slider's Vintage kind of killed my desire for other pickups in strats. Actually, the Ron Ellis hype makes me curious but good luck getting them.

    That is such a beauty.

I just picked up a '95 or '96 MIM Strat and I ordered a set of BG Pups Vintage 60s. I haven't heard them in person before - just internet clips but I own a set of his humbuckers and a set of his humbucker sized P90s.

There are clips if you scroll down past the 'add to cart'.

Based on the quality of the other 2 sets I went with his Strat set. 8 weeks wait time before shipping but, the set of humbuckers I have from him are my fav set of humbuckers that I have ever had. That's saying a fair amount since I have likely had 2 dozen sets and mixed/matched etc.

Fralin Blues Specials. Really fat and thick and SRV like. Also use that same set in my Tele, he has a Tele set with the same type of tone, so a beefy twang. I love it. Definitely not the Knopfler thing. For that you'd want the '54 set.... Vintage Hot is probably an in between but if you are wanting chime, the Real '54s are where it's at.

But Lindy is my favorite single coil winder.

From what I hear the new Fender CS 69' sets are no longer wound by AY, and the ones that were are a bit pricier and harder to come buy now.

That's good to know, Formvar wire and the low wind is what I am looking for.

The A3 "vintage wound" set I got from Sklar Guitars is fantastic.
    Fiber bobbins and formvar wire.

bright, snappy, great mids... these are what the perfect 50's Strat sounds like IMO.

you can hear them here: (mostly the bridge pup, but I switch to the middle/bridge at the end)

The neck on this white Strat is really nice. Satin finish on the back that is super smooth, slim taper C profile and 9.5" radius. It plays like a dream. Figure once I get some better pickups and wiring in this guitar it should really be sweet.
