    well here's an update
a regular visit to my esteemed orthopedic surgeon in June '17
revealed that I had highly elevated chromium and cobalt levels as the
result of a titanium hip installed in '01

these things are supposed to last a lifetime,...not so much

after a MARS MRI (radiologists chime in) some special scan that allows viewing
of a metal joint with igniting the patient to a fiery death
it revealed that I also had a cluster of tumors (yes, it IS a toomah !) and
was told that I would need to have the prosthesis replaced

I was already trying to find 'a window' to have my shoulder replaced
this is a considerable procedure as it takes 3 - 6 months to recover
so in discussions with my hip surgeon, he said it would be advantageous to
have the hip replaced as to avoid metallosis, so I scheduled the procedure
    for mid January
there's a shit ton of pre-op testing that needs to be done, MERSA screen, a battery of blood
tests, need a fresh chest X-ray
Fortunately I'd had complete work ups last summer, including stress test, EKG..the whole dog & pony show...thankfully I'm remarkably healthy at 58

I live alone in a t/h with both a basement and 2nd floor, so without 24/7 help for a couple
of weeks, I had to stay at a SCF (skilled care facility, really cool name for a nursing home) for
about to weeks, until my physical therapist determined I was safe

scheduled for 1/23, bumped to 1/25
I get to Weiss Memorial in Chicago at 5:30 am (this is Uptown, Mal knows where)
surgery was unremarkable, and despite the temptation of the liquid ecstasy that is Dilaudid
I only hit PCA twice, this is a remarkable level of restraint...you don't get that stuff very often
made a note to myself to try and walk the day of surgery and I did
they only wanted me to do a few steps, I managed 70 ft.

here's my 3 day luxury accommodations, note the Zenith CRT
    [IMG]

so, on the 29th I was transferred to a very nice SCF and started an intense PT program
90 minutes in the am, 1 hour of occupational therapy, and another hour of PT in the afternoon
21 days from surgery to home

no MERSA, cold or flu, no DVT's - so far everything has gone well

the hunk of metal that occupied my right side from 7/5/01 - 1/25/18, replaced by
    ceramic components now
pathology dropped it off, with bone still on it...reminds me of a red velvet cupcake

so I'm still hobbling, dealing with some swelling and walking with a cane

You should have had the addadichtomy while you were already under.

Ewww. What about the tumors. Were they a result of the chromium? I'm assuming yes....

    Boy, ain't we got fun???

i am not showing that pic to Her; just found out today that the tendons are failing on Her right shoulder replacement after 2 years, and it will probably end up getting yanked in favor of or reverse installation. (much profanity....)

And I am amazed at (and baffled by) your restraint on the dilaudid; I had it after my 2nd back surgery, and I think I was still trying to press the button a week after they took it away (that stuff is nice; one the one hand the it makes the pain a lot less, and on the other, it otherwise makes you feel sooooo good........)! Enough to make me glad I can't stand needles, I'll tell you.

yeppers, I have to get some of those 'museum bugs' to eat
    the bone off
it's the calcification that develops to fuse into the pelvis
    and its like stone
that or go to work on it with a Dremel or similar

I remember having dilaudid through my iv some years back when I was hospitalized for food poisoning. Talk about painful. But yeah....that stuff is the stuff of dreams. Took me 3 weeks to get over the withdrawals.
