I've recently just bought a Epiphone Elite Tak Matsumoto Signature LP and during my research saw on a couple of sites that it was to do with satisfying Ovation who used the "Elite" name previously so Epiphone changed the name to "Elitist" to differentiate from Ovation "Elite".

At the time I was a bit paranoid about all the fakes out there and with nothing to compare it with it was quite a journey.

When I checked the serial number on the Epiphone serial site it says it was made very early 2003 at the Fujigen factory, I cant recall the exact date..January I think.

Mine has the 'Open Book' headstock so was made for the Japanese local market.

Although a different shape than the Gibson open book. Narrower at the top...

Yes, mine's a skinny one, but as shown there are wide-flares out there.

Gibson doesn't own the brand name 'Gibson' in Japan I don't know how that happened, so would appreciate any input from anyone who can help out.

I have a 2005 JDM Epiphone Les Paul Standard LQ. Yes it has a Gibson "Open Book" headstock. Superb guitar and it rivals guitars from Gibson's Custom Shop. Quality and Workmanship are outstanding. And the LQ is sprayed with acrylic lacquer. IMO, This sits at the top of the Epi LP's. It weighs 9 pounds on the dot!

Because the open book has elegant lines and curves.

The tombstone is just lumpy looking.

(Still love my Epi though...even if she is a bit foogly.)

I actually considered something like that when I still had an Epiphone (but then, just make the corners as to not make the headstock even longer than it is).
I probably shouldn't have cared (the guitar would still play/sound the same) but I'm not going to lie. I like aesthetics too.

I own Gibsons and I own Epiphones. I still don't get the hang up some folks have over the Epiphone headstocks.
You want a Gibson headstock, buy a Gibson. You get an Epiphone, it's gonna have a bigass headstock. Deal with it.

Okay, let the hating on me begin. :hippie:

No hate here, my friend.....here, let me deflect a lil hate from you. I actually PREFER the Epi clipped corners headstock to Gibson's ...so, there ya go ;)
