I am really getting confused here and appreciate any help. I bought this Les Paul back in the mid 1990's. The guy that I bought it from said it was a custom shop I don't guess I even asked about the year. I see that most people don't put the whole number on the web so I guess I'll follow suite. The serial number looks like this:
    5 44XX
It is "inked" on the headstock. Looking at this site, it looks like a 1950 something.
Vintage Guitars Info - Gibson collecting vintage gibson guitars
Here is a picture off that site that looks like mine.

If it were a 50 something, it would have to have been stored in a case all these years. I'm sure there is some type of exception to these numbers. Thanks for any help.

    A 1995 model, maybe?

Didn't they make "Pre-Historics" back then?

I'm as curious as you are! :D

You are probably right on. It looked brand new (still does) when I bought it. I'd like to figure out exactly what I have. Back then I didn't really care, I just wanted a Les Paul.

B-, I think you are right. I just found this one on ebay.
It's a 1996 Classic and numbered like mine.

Sounds like a 95 Classic to me, so possibly not Custom Shop.

Historic collection was introduced in 1993, so probably not a "pre-historic". Got any photos?

I don't think it's a classic. At the time he and my buddy told me it was a $6K guitar in the stores. My buddy bought a blue one just like it and he showed me the tag on his. This guy needed the money and I was in the right place at the right time. Here are some pics.
