I bought this 55 a few years back and just left her the way I got her. She's a work horse and been refretted along with a belly cut on her back through the years but she's the best vintage Jr I have ever played. Something about this old slab just sounds soooo good. She was once in her life black due to neck being painted and serial number being covered during process. No breaks on her just a kinda ugly brown color. So would you refinish her to Black Nitro? Was there some kind of funky cover/top screwed onto the body at some point in its history?

Not sure what this old girl has been thru as far as screw holes and wood putty lol. Don't think a few coats of Nitro would change her sound but getting a little tired of the color. Always liked Charlie Starr's of Blackberry Smokes old Black 56

First, it looks like a warrior.
Second, there are many arguments to be had here but as far as I'm concerned,
finishing it will probably change the tone.

Since it's " the best vintage Jr I have ever played", I would leave it as is.

I would do that black in a second. A quick lazy junior finish that sinks in and wears quickly.

People say “leave it, it has a story”. Maybe the next chapter is black

I would go for it as long as it's done right, but leaving is never a bad option either.

I have a 56' junior right now, its amazing and I love it. But its got a thick ugly yellow refin. I am sending it out this week for a proper refin. Honestly I'd love to find a stripped jr like yours to have fun with.
