    Hi guys,
Just ordered some Iron Gear pickups. The Blues Engine for the neck, and the Dirty Torque for the bridge.
I was going to put them in a cheap $200 Chinese Les Paul.
That got me thinking, Maybe buy a second hand Epiphone standard and upgrade the wiring and pickups, with the above.

Would that be an upgrade from the standard Epi pickups?
I don't own an Epi, but I am sure it's way better than my cheap Chinese Les Paul.
Could be a better option, what do you guys think?

Epi pickups are hit an miss, ive had some out of a special 2 that were great and some out of other sg's and lp's that were in the meh category. I'd say most people (not necessarily the people around here) think epi pickups suck so most aftermarket pickuos are an upgrade.
But just because they are different doesnt mean they will be better. You might find you like the stock pups better.

Epiphone's ProBucker pickups are very good. The 57CH and HOTCH set was good, too.

I've read good things about Iron Gear, but I don't know how much of an upgrade they would be, if any.

Hmmm, this was the case. Since the moved to Probuckers, this really doesn't hold true. Granted, Speciall 2s are 99 dollar guitars, and don't use the probuckers.

I don't think Iron Gear would be an upgrade to Probuckers. MAYBE a lateral move.

Let's be fair - Iron Gear does have a good reputation and a lot of good reviews. And Iron Gear does have a wider variety of pickups than Epiphone does (so if the Epi pickups aren't what the player is looking for they're a good, inexpensive alternative).

Having said that, I don't think they have anything significantly better than a ProBucker...

... for the $$$....Iron Gear is a good option for their variety. ( Humbucker sized P90 - Alchemist 90 is very nice.. imo) The Epi ProBuckers in the PTP are def Sweet

Does not the quality depend on the brief the manufacturers are given?
I have a chinese neck thru 'super strat' on which the pickups were horrendously cr@p but I don't believe all chinese pickups are horrendously cr@p.

The lower end of guitars in general normally comes from China or Indonesia. Sometimes Vietnam... I rmb ESP making guitars there

Normally for mid-range quality instrument are from Korea, Japan and to a certain extend Mexico on the higher range... To a certain extend China but I don't really wanna put that up here

High end guitars to me are usually made in USA and to a certain extend Japan.

    That's my opinion anyway

Iron gear Blues Engines sounds pretty good, and I'd prefer them over the old Epi humbuckers, but certainly not over Epi Probuckers and Alnico Pros.

Dunno....all I can add is that the stock pups in my '07 Epi LP Std are OK enough to me to not consider replacing them ....at least not yet ;)

I have the blues engine (neck) and tesla shark (bridge) in my '01 Epi LP Classic and I must say they sound so much better than the originals that were in. Much more open and defined sound. When upgrading, I also used their Mr. Page wiring kit.

I was first thinking of using a SD Hot rodded set, but got these instead because of the reviews I saw on the net. I have SD's in a Strat, but the Iron Gear pups are as good as the SD I think.
And price wise: you can get a set IGs for less than one SD pu.

I have a '98 snakepit, it has standard epi pickups and they are fine, I have only heard good things about the Irongear stuff and interested in a comparison, there is much snake oil re pickups and it's good to hear differing views. Tonerider are another Far East import, and the late great Nimrod Piles recommended their strat pickups highly for sound quality and price and that is good enough for me.

    I hope they're OK:fingersx:
