I had the same Mel Bay book as the OP. Whatever songs were in there, I guess I learned.

Once I got an electric & a li'l Peavey, I can't recall the first song, but my next-door neighbor & I used to "Battle" each other on Smoke on the Water! :dude:

Walk Don't Run. Learnt it off of a four song LP "Play Guitar with the Ventures that I found at my dad's when we went to visit him for the summer in 1980. This had lead, rhythm and bass parts written out and then played on the album, with one take missing each instrument in turn. The other three songs were Tequila, Memphis and Raunchy.

The cool thing about it is I never even knew he had played guitar until one of his friends recently told me that my dad was pretty good when they were younger - I had always thought it was my uncle that was the player.

In all seriousness, I think the first song I learned was... ugh... I forgot it. I think it was
"Breaking The Law" by Judas Priest

Is this thread real? I still couldn't play half these songs, at least not very well. I think my first song was like Heart of Gold or some such easy strumming song.

Black Sabbath's NIB. Learned the majority of the riff after my second lesson. After a few more weeks I tackled the rest of the riffs (theres really only three riffs in the song so its all good). The only part I got stuck on was the little bits after the power chords in the main riff. I got those a few months later.

As for the solos.... I still can't touch Iommi lol.

After the Smoke on the Water riff, I think the first song was T-N-T.

That was a little less than 1 year ago.

On acoustic, it was the intro to Stairway to Heaven, followed very closely by Talk Tonight by Oasis. On electric, it was the main riff to Smoke On the Water.

For me, it was blushes..Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana .... simple song, and I learned everything by ear. It was the first song I ever learned to play everything. Thus, in a few months later I bought Metallica songs and lessons to play Fade to Black ... self-taught guitar solos. Thought I would return to practice more .....

I love this song and it was my second song, Mark Farner and Grand Funk are awesome.
My first song was Hey Joe - Jimi hendrix, I spent weeks learning it note for note.
