Virtual workbench. This will be a 22 fret, 25" scale length, TOM bridge version of the Phoenix I just finished.

    Well, same body and headstock.

Considered a wraptail bridge, but while they look cool IMO they dont sound as good. I'm sure someone will disagree with that assessment, but oh well. I believe it :)

This one will have an awesome brazilian rosewood fretboard I just bought from Archey, and I'm gonna bide my time till I can snag a
freakish piece of quilted maple for a book matched top.

Heres the braz board...I love this with half heart wood and half sapwood. Ive seen a bunch of builds with this kind of thing and always wanted one :)

Incidentally, my Phoenix guitar is entered in the GOTM contest on projectguitar.com. If you are a member, feel free to throw me a vote :)

Looks cool. I have a couple of ziricote boards that look almost identical. Should be cool.

    Cheers Peter.

Is it free to join? Might be worth it to just vote for the phoenix

I appreciate the thought, Corey. It's free to join but I believe a certain post count is required before you can vote. Keeps it more honest, unlike presidential elections in the USA :)

Chris, on the Popular Vote, you're a shoe-in ... not sure if PG has an Electoral College. ;)

I DID at least bother to look at the competition, but it was no contest. :yesway:

Next build looks nice, especially the fretboard. Any colors in mind yet? Agree about TOM vs Wraptail ... not sure about tone, but it'll look better.

    :cheers2:

Possibly a turquoise-ish burst. Not 100% on that. OTOH Freddys's burst photo is giving me pause to consider a more traditional color scheme. In either case, this time headstock matches body. I'll use a piece left from the top to veneer the headstock and gave it the same finish as the body

I'm already eyeing a slab of quilted maple. Well have to see. Depends on some of my pending sales :)

That piece of maple is certainly worthy of one of your builds Chris.

IMG_7844.JPG IMG_7845.JPG IMG_1008.JPG All fine sanded, just need to make a neck for the pine one and glue that in

The pup ring is hitting the bridge so I may have to direct mount it, or get a metal surround and sand that down

I found a cherry table leaf at an antique story for $1. I cut it in half and glued it together and it was 2" thick. It's comprised of multiple pieces but it'll become my next guitar.

    Yup.

I have a bunch of good sources for flame figured maple, but to date I've only found one place that regularly has seriously awesome quilt, and thats the Ebay guy r_woodson. He always has great pieces, but they are always auctions and never come cheap.

Particularly hard to find pieces thick enough to get a full carved top. My 22 and 24 magnum builds have tops roughly 0.8" thick which means the billet has to be 2+ inches to start, particularly if its not perfectly flat and I lose some thickness to flattening before I can even get to the resawing part...

Yeah, I had a feeling you got it from him. I think I've gotten about 20 pieces in my workshop that I scored through him the past 2 years. I think I have a problem. :D You should check out nwtimber.net. Although, I find their prices on the high side. And I also suspect that's where Woodson gets his stuff from in bulk. Amazing selection of wood, but could cost a fortune.
