I am trying to find out what year my Gibson Les Paul guitar is, I have gone to 3 different places to have it appraised and nobody locally can tell me what year I have.

It is a Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty" There is no "Made in USA" stamp on the back of the neck, which indicates pre-70. However, there is a volute on the neck, which apparently started in 1970. The serial number, 917911, indicates a year of 1968. There is no indication that the neck has been changed, all the appraisers agree on this fact.

Any help or insight with this is appreciated.

You should probably go to the Norlin section with this one. When you do, please post pics. I or one of the others there can probably identify it rather quickly. Norlin Years - My Les Paul Forums

It is an Early 1970. Made in the USA began in mid 1970. And SNs in the 900,000 include 1970-1972 Les Pauls. The volute happened very late 1969.

Pot code dates are also helpful. They tend to be older than the actual date of the guitar by a few weeks to a few months.

It blows me away that "guitar appraisers" are not AT LEAST experts on Gibson, Fender, and Martin. I would think that would be the minimum requirement.

I will give you an appraisal, assuming an excellent (90%) all original instrument w/OHSC: $3500-$4000.

I was just trying to wrangle him into the right forum is all, being that it was a '70.

Perhaps he asked in so many places, he doesn't know where to look for the answer. :)

most likely it is an early 70's model, but serial numbers are not very good for dating a Gibson guitar in the early 70's, so we need to check some other things, please take some photos and post it in the Norlin era sub section and we will give you a more in depth appraisal of her for you
