What is a Photoflame top?

    As far as photoflame goes with Epiphone only Japan made sometimes would have that...

    This Japan Epi has a suspiciously perfect flame maple bookmatch...

    How thin are the veneers? Shouldn't you be able to figure it out by taking the PUs out and looking at edge of the top where it shows in the PU cavity?

    There isn't a standard thickness however most are Very thin (around 0,5mm).
    I have used aquarella papers that much thicker....

    Yes and some early epis sometimes are layered like body, cap, something dark, veneer, newer ones less layers between body and veneer

    And here's an interesting Epi without the veneer

    In it's previous life it was a Custom.
    The body is made out of Meranti, top is alder with nicely figured swamp ash wings.
    It also has maple neck.

    To me, a veneer so thin and and photoflame equals the same, they both look artificial due to their nature. Plus sometimes what is underneath might be a thousand times more beautiful, like the lady below..

    My Fujigen Orville 59' Tobacco burst is a photo-flame. Killer guitar, long neck tenon, 1/2 inch Maple top.
