    It was 38 years ago today. On that Sunday morning and for some reason, I turned on my bedside radio, something I never did. There was the alerts from Civil Defense. Mount Saint Helens had erupted in a big way. I got out of bed and went over to my window, the one that faced east. There was a gigantic dark grey mushroom cloud that engulfed the whole of the eastern sky.
    I got on the phone to friends, waking them from their sleep. We organized a trip to the top of Mt Brinion there in Kelso Washington to watch the event.
    That was the single most amazing event I have ever experienced. We had a picnic and watched the eruption for hours.....May 18, 1980.

    A fellow with a tripod and big camera was there and this was one of the pictures he took:
