Have a vintage set of 1950's P-90's I'm attempting to bring back to original spec. Can anyone inform me of the kind of tape used to insulate the hot lead of the pickup at the bottom of the baseplate? I know Throbak uses it on their reproduction P-90's so it's still available for purchase somewhere. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Pictures below for reference.

    Thanks.

Looks like plain old masking tape to me.

I'd ask ask James at ReWind or Jon Gundry at Throbak.

Both of them have restored many P90's.

FWIW, I wouldn't get hung up about the Tape.

    Good luck.

It's very old masking tape. I saw Harbor Freight selling that style a few years back in their catalog but was out of stock when I ordered?

    It's masking tape.

I actually have a roll of the same stuff (from the '50s) around here somewhere.

If I can find it, maybe I could sell it to someone who does pickup restos, for a premium?

    :naughty:

Do you know the size, name of the stuff used?
If you'd like to sell and ship a small portion (6" or so), I'd be grateful.

Go to a local office supply-Home depot-Loews, Look for the tape section. Probably get a whole roll for $1/$2..
    its maybe 1" wide

Ahhhh.... I thought it wasn't made anymore.
Is anyone aware if Gibson coated it after it was wrapped? The vintage examples appear to have a sheen to them.

The stuff listed at Harbor Freight had the same texture and finish as the tape on the 50s PUP. It was a different shade and texture than the smooth light colored modern 3M type. It looked more like the lacquer tape without the green tint. If you see the roll, you'd know what I'm saying. A few years back a guy from Ukraine had the right stuff listed on Ebay but I didn't want to send funds to that part of the world with Ebay buyer protection only covering the world I live in.

Do you know what the name of it is on Harbor Freight?

Thanks for the info! I'll try and dig around the internet for it.

It was "masking tape", but I saw it only a couple of times and not since in years. If you search out masking tape in off brands, I think you'd see something you like?
