hey guys. my stock 6l6s in my tweaker crapped out so i bought some el34s, stuck them in and it does not sound great. very muddy when you crank it. and somehow my guitar actually sounds out of tune.

what are some recommendations for tubes for this amp? my preference is for cleaner tones since i can always boost it with a pedal. at this point i'm leaning back to 6l6s. was wondering what other tubes or tube brands you guys use to get good tones in the tweaker.

It probably sounds crappy because your amp has a output transformer designed for 6L6's.

You can't just put any ol' tubes in an amp.

I'd like to add, you can put KT66's in your amp, since your tweaked runs off 6L6's.

I never really cared for 6L6's myself. Give the KT66's a try. They're much more colorful.

the amp is designed to run different tubes. there are plenty of people that put el34s in it.

but yeah i'll probably buy n ew 6l6s and go with that.

We're talking about the Egnator Tweaker 40, correct?

Yes, it's designed to be able to handle different tubes, damage wise. The plate voltage of the amp is not meant for EL34's. Putting different tubes in that amp won't hurt the amp for awhile, but the Output Tranny isn't designed for EL34's, so it's not going to sound like it should. It will need to be modded to sound proper with EL34's.

I've owned around 30 different amps in my life, including the Egnator tweaker 40. It's a good amp, but it's designed to use 6L6(6550, KT66 as well) type tubes.

Btw, what brand tubes are you using?

    they are JJ el34s.

what you're saying makes sense. also it's the 15 watt tweaker, not the 40.

I'm running a pair of matched JJ 6V6's in my Tweaker and it sounds absolutely incredible. You can use any octel tube in the Tweaker, but if you liked the sound before, put some 6V6's in it.

    Where did RH1 go?

Am I going to have to deal with this myself?

Okay, now things are coming together much more.

Your amp runs 6V6's. Essentially the 6L6's younger brother. You would want to run EL84's if you wanted a sound similar to EL34's. You can safely run the EL84's as they don't change the load of the Output Tranny like 6L6's to El34's do.

If you want to run the bigger tubes, you'll need the "88 mod" done to your amp. You can do more research on that mod via google if you'd like, as I don't know too much about it.
