It is not unusual for the neck to read higher than the bridge on a Shaw set. They run in the 6.9-7.4K range (depending on the temperature)

Yes June 1981 and the other numbers are abbreviated model numbers. They are NOT serial numbers.

Thanks for the info SKATTERBRANE! :thumb:

So do the numbers 392/393 indicate the guitar model, (Custom) or pickup position, (bridge/neck)?? Or maybe both? :hmm:

392 neck 393 bridge, but I have seen those same pickup model numbers in several of the Spotlight Specials I have owned. There are several model numbers that are Shaws, and there are several that are NOT Shaws. Just because they have ink stamped codes does not mean they are Shaws.

Here are some model numbers of Shaws I have owned. They all had two white plastic spacers, thick, rough cast AlNiCo 5 magnets, the square in circle holes mounted on the opposite side than PAFs or 57 Classics (etc) do. And DCR measurements between 7.1k and 7.4K:

    401/403
    489/490
    329/330
    137/138
    372/373
    498/499
    392/393
    898/899

There is a guy on the les paul forum, who knows Tim Shaw and asked him about the first 3 numbers. TS said that 137 and 138 where the Gibson internal parts number for humbucker pickups at that time (1980). TS didn't explain the other numbers.

Post #29 is the best I can offer. 1986-1987 Shaws did not have ink stamps at all.

I seem to recall that the leads soldered to the coil wire was a different color than the P-490s (P-490s are orange and white, not sure about the Shaws)

The magnets were thicker in the Shaws, and they were unoriented. I'm thinking I heard that the Shaws had maple spacers too, rather than the plastic ones found in P-490s.

I think Shaws had poly coated wire, so that'd be the same as other Gibson pups at the time.

I'm not 100% on all of this, but I believe I've read such things..

no, no potting, he was doing his best to re-create PAFs as best he could.
