What does it sound like and what amp are you using?
My white Gibson standard is a candidate for the most beautiful les paul I think.
Or an odd and forgotten Gibson Artist
That's a loaded question, in that there are loads of possible answers. It sounds like a Les Paul of course because it is. Comparing it to other Les Pauls I've heard/played it does seem to have a warmer, richer sound compared to maple tops. However, that could be my own perception based on the fact that it "appears" warmer with the natural wood and the sense of mahogany being softer, richer, and warmer than hard maple. It could also have something to do with mass, at 9lbs 12oz it's heavier than the maple top LP Standards of recent years. Since mahogany is less dense than maple, I can only speculate that it's not weight relieved. It could also be none, some, or all of the above
In any case, I didn't just buy it for the looks, that's just what got my attention first. It sounded better to me than the maple tops I was able to try, but being more into blues, folk, and classic rock I tend to like a nice warm, full, rich sound more than bright, jangly, or sparkly. The sustain and volume unplugged also seemed better than the others I tried. Again, that could be due to just about anything. On top of that, the build quality was perfect, I didn't find any of the little flaws in fit and finish that I saw on some of the maple top Standards.
I'm playing it thru an Orange Rocker 15 tube amp. It's perfect for me because I'm a strictly at home hobby player. It's a wonderful sounding small tube amp with high quality basics and no cheap frills. It gives me everything I want without overkill. I had a chance to get a new Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee for a steal price but I kept my Orange because to me it was a better sound and fit for what I'm doing.
I don't honestly know if all that's going to answer your question one bit... but it ain't for lack of trying
In no particular order, I believe these are the most interesting visually.
But all of them are beautiful in the end.
Overall like most here, I like mine
Neck pickup is not oriented properly for Greenie. Did he “fix” it ?
One of my favs of the entire thread
I'm lucky enough to have four candidates . . . in order of acquisition . . .
My '95 Mahogany Custom Shop Custom has been getting some attention lately...
No that was very comprehensive thanks! Never played through an orange amp so that's another question about tone thee too!
I will never find another like this one.
This was for sale in the MIJ thread five years ago, or so, and it still haunts my avaricious dreams.
My only Les Paul: 2011 Custom Shop Standard, Purple Edge Burst
Nice tie too ;-)
Thanks. Here's a full view of the tie:
No, because that is not 9 2208...
