The reason, which is pretty unsupportable given that it's subjective, is that the blacker ebony is the more beautiful it is.

A subjective proposition, but widespread. Hence the premium.

Having said that, and having implied it's a rather shallow point of view, I should admit that I subscribe to it. I could excuse my own shallowness by offering the mitigation that the only ebony board I own happens to be the most playable, the smoothest, the most seductive I've ever encountered. And that'd be true. But the depthless blackness is a big factor in my affection for it.

The neck in Udo's second shot could sway me away...

Dings & "dongs" aside, Harold's LS100 could sway me...I haven't bought a MIJ LP in at least 8 months and am suffering withdrawal...having always wanted a Wine Red custom & Tokay to boot, this is a tough one to pass up. LS100 from '79 must be something special. Do those Gotoh PAFs sound clear & airy or what?

They are surprisingly clear pickups. I think they measure a little over 8k. I never had installed them because the Tokai came with T-tops in it. The Gotohs were stock in my other custom and I like the way they sound, though I have been trying some other pickups for fun.

I'm gonna throw my opinion out there... NONE of those strike me as Ebony.
And even if they are CALLED ebony, that does not mean they ARE!.
Khaya and Sapele are called mahogany 99% of the time, but Sapele is a horrible wood. Brittle and ugly.7
Khaya... MAYBE that can be called mahogany... but it's only by affiliation/similarity.

The black dense ebony you commonly see on guitars comes from the core of the species which is native to India and Africa while the striped species originates in Indonesia.
Each of those species fall under the Diospyros family just as all the various types of Maple fall under the Aceraceae family.

Do the woody brown outer areas of the very same black species from India and Africa you claim to be legit ebony cease to be Diospyros as well?
Ebony needs to be polished and oiled to be smooth and shiny otherwise it too shows grain, striping, and porosity.
I prefer the striped kind myself. :)

The sap wood of Gaboon Ebony is bright creamy white colored, and retains exactly the same hardness and smoothness of the rest of the wood.
Where sapwood is involved ebony still has a highly distinctive look from rosewood.
Macassar ebony is different, is has brown in it... but it still looks nothing at all like rosewood. It's still less porous, harder.

Have an Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Studio with White finish available for sale. It has been customized with cream parts and has a set of RH Factor PAF style pickups with Alnico II magnets installed. There are some dings on the body including one on the bottom front that has been touched up. The touch up was done with White paint ordered from Epiphone but it has a bluish tint to it for some reason. It will be shipped in a newer SKB case with TSA latches.
    $499 + sh/pp.

Greco PU-2 set, close to new condition with plastic still on the covers. These were probably taken out of a new Greco back in the day and put away.
Both read about 8.3 k and appear to be double black bobbins. Wax potted.

My 2011 Heritage H-150 25th Anniversary model is still available. This one has a fat 59 neck profile and seymour duncan pups. It's really a great guitar.
