My first guitar is an epi special II that now sits around and waits for me to experiment on. I have this fantasy of sanding it down to a natural finish, removing the both pickups, and installing a telecaster style neck pickup with whatever bridge humbucker may compliment it. Is this a stupid idea that I should abandon immediately, or should I continue to fantasize until my balls grow large enough to try it out?

Hell, it's cheap enough. Go for it!

Be aware, though, if you sand it down that there may be a three- piece body underneath the paper-thin veneer... or worse.

This was under my Junior when I refinished it:

I took off the veneer that you see there, and ended up with this:

Used my imagination with the finish (stained ebony, then sanded back to match up the shade of all pieces) and ended up with this:

That's not bad. Mind showing me the finished product? If I take the plunge, I am not gonna be too picky with this thing since it it worthless to me anyways. I am going for a stripped back pawnshop kind of look.

The finished axe (mine has a scraped edge for a "faux binding" effect)-

I know this is an old post but how exactly did you do the faux binding?

I put Dream 90's in my Special II and I love how it sounds. It's become my go to guitar over my 339 and strat.
