A good friend blessed me with a second hand 2007 tele squier that was in need of some TLC. What is peculiar is the gap between the pickguard and the end of the neck. The only explanation I find is that the pickguard was meant to be for the standard series which sports a 22 fret neck instead of 21. Any ideas?

I'm not sure about the 21/22 fret theory as the 22 fret necks tend just to overhang so the neck itself isn't as long, but the fingerboard is.

I've been looking for a replacement pickguard for my 'new' Tele as I'm converting it to a humbucker in the neck position and didn't notice any options for 21/22 frets when I was searching.

Yeap. I think my theory is wrong. Never seen a pickguard like that to be honest....
