played a '74 standard yesterday and the neck was very thin near the first fret and as thick as an old 58' around the 15th fret....is this normal?! Or did someone sand it down? Never played a guitar with such a radical change in neck thickness!!

Don't know about '74 but I played a '69/70 with the same feature. I was really surprised.

There was no target shape really. Of course necks do change over time as well as them being quite individual due to the hand shaping/final sanding step.

Also too there were a few special orders about, not to mention urban legends of employees making a guitar they want then a mate in the paint shop deliberately making it a second so it could be bought cheaply.

I had a '74 Standard myself and saw at least two more. They all had pretty slim neck at all length.

All three of the '70's Les Pauls I have owned, including the current one, have been like this. I find them to be the most comfortable necks for me.

Thin to DAMN is pretty normal in my experience.

My '76 SG is thinner up at the nut, but proabaly over an inch at the 12th.

Yep, most taper. Every now and again one will pop up with a nice non-tapered fairly chunky neck.

Had 3 '74's. All of them had slim taper necks near the nut and would chunky be the 12th. Similar on a '79 Custom I had too.

Completely normal to find that on a les paul of that era. My '71 deluxe has a neck just like that and I love it!

Pretty common for especially early 70s necks. They really varied quite a bit, but this type of heavily tapered necks is not hard to find. I really like these, they are very suitable for fast and technical playing.
