"If yours has no volute there is a problem......"

So you feel that without the volute mine might be a fake?

    How so? Please explain?

Everything that I have seen with mine to date (pot codes among other things) points to an authentic USA Gibson.

    Am I misisng something?

First is my 1980, with a volute, PAF in the neck and Patent Sticker in the bridge. Tuners are not original, as I literally wore the original tulip Grovers out! Monstrous tone and feel.

Next up is my "roachie" 1982, that has been horribly refinished (I think), has no volute. Not sure if it originally had the pock marked/speckled finish, but it's definitely all mahogany. Not sure if that "harmonica" bridge is original, likely not. I'm not a fan of those bridges and may change it someday. Plays only OK and has been relegated to slide duty. It just dawned on me that I need to add this one to the "Norlin Count" thread!

Just wanted to add that it was more than yours that lost the volute.

My 82 Lester doesn't have one either. Pretty sure they were phased out around then, but the experts can check me on that.

You sir are likely correct on that time frame My '80 Firebrand and '81 Custom both have volutes, but my '82 Firebrand does not.

I don't think so.....but could be, not much nitro there......

there are also no "black paint speckled" nor "dents and marks added at the factory"....

those are mineral streaks/deposits and the wood is very porous etc. etc......comes like that naturally, and darken a little with the manufacturing process.....

Yes the volute is phased out in 82.

Ballzz, why do you think the black is a refin?

Mini crank winding tuners and pick dispensers are ALIEN technology. Gibson must have a UFO hidden somewhere....:eek2:

We discussed that very thing in the Norlin Hatred thread. Alien brainwashing was one theory put forth to explain the nonsensical changes and complete disregard for the previous quality standards that have come to define the Norlin period for the haters.

It was speculated that aliens were responsible for making the workers lose all memory of how to make the guitars they had been making all along once Norlin took over...

However.... Robotuners with a push button powered pick dispenser might have been a brilliant move on Gibson's part.

Could have turned their fortunes around by offering the public something practical and useful!

    Just sayin'.....

    Norlin haters,...whatcha gonna do?

Me, Norlins, and Aliens get along just fine. I can't remember when we didn't :hmm:

I think the problem with Henry J. Is that he broke his ALIEN implant.;)

Exactly right! The Firebrand had the Gibson logo wood burned in, the Paul had a gold logo decal..had one.

    Kick meself for selling it!

Well, a couple things. One, a while back when I had it apart, I seem to remember some tell tale signs, there appear to be light sanding scratches "under" the finish and some have said that neither The Paul or LP Firebrand were available in other colors. Not certain of the validity of any of those points though. I'll clean it up and try to get some more detailed pics and maybe you can help figure out yay or nay?

I should probably start another thread about it, so as not to hijack "vklobucar's" thread! Sorry 'bout that!

    Thanks,
    Gene
