Personally I find that many people tend to be too myopic about musical genres and often simply focus in on style and that's where they stay.
If only they would sometimes think outside the box and look at musical cultures from around the world, they would would find a wealth of inspiration.

Take the humble yet mystical pentatonic scale.
Everyone instantly thinks blues guitar licks, yet listen to it played on a Chinese instrument called an Erhu.
Ok the scale is the same, but listen to the phrasing and dynamics. The slurs and vibrato on certain notes.
With a little imagination one can quite easily adapt any of these licks into ones blues repertoire.

This is nothing more than a Chinese blues song..We just need to unlock our imagination. For instance just imagine some of the licks at around 1:34 applied to a guitar..The adition of the B to create tension then quickly resolving to a C of the D minor pentatonic scale at 1:58...Yes, of course it's been used many times in western music ( Adding the 6th of the diatonic scale to resolve on the dominant seventh. I often use that trick myself ) But it's refreshing to hear it from a different perspective and certainly food for thought..:laugh2:

Yeah, at this rate we'd all better be learning Chinese blues songs... :hmm:

BTW, love the series, I've been watching it off and on as I have some downtime and I'm really enjoying it. Kinda like the "Connections" series, but for music.

Wow, first post from me, and just to say a big thanks for this - and indeed all the other stuff posted by Huw and others - absolute godsend to see all this in one place and so clearly explained.

I remember this series when it was on telly, and found a new favourite song via watching it - The Wild Goose by Kate Rusby........beautiful song, and a great vid of it live on YouTube also.

My New Years resolution this year was all about getting more knowledgable on guitar - I think I've found the right place to succeed :)

Didn't catch it on Saturday, so I'm looking forward to watching it on the iPlayer. He's been guesting on a few shows on Radio 3 and dropping teasers to stoke up the anticipation.

    :)
