This has slipped under the radar for many people overseas.

For those who don't know, Scotland is about to hold a referendum on whether to leave the UK and become an independent country.

At the moment, opinion polls are showing 51% for and 49% against.

If the yes vote wins, the 300+ year union of Scotland & England will end, and may even mean the end of the Union Jack flag.

Have you actually looked into the ramifications of the 'Yes' side winning?

Like a possible mortgage meltdown, currency adoption, and other market issues? Yep.

We Scots are a tough bunch, been waiting for this for centuries.

Will Scotland relinquish their paper towel division to England if they secede?

I myself would love for Scotland to stay in the union, but who could blame them for wanting to be in charge of their own destiny and break the shackles of Westminster.

The other posters on here are right, the ramifications of Scotland leaving the union are huge.
The political landscape of the British Isles will change forever regardless if Scotland secedes or not.

I wish them all the best....ya bastids. :thumb:

There are significantly more issues than those.

You're Scottish? What, exactly, is your connection to Scotland?

If you were Scots you wouldn't be claiming that the Scots have been waiting for this for centuries because they haven't. Some have, others haven't.

And Scotland prospered under the Union in a way in which it wouldn't have had it not been part of the United Kingdom.

But they plan to stay in the EU which means they will be ruled from Brussels. That part of it makes no sense to me, none whatsoever.

Colchar, I take it that the Scots would still recognize the House of Windsor as the rightful royalty of Scotland and England? Or would they opt for the Stuarts?

Scotland would get a percentage of whatever is left but how it will be divided has yet to be determined. If divided geographically based on the physical location of the oil Scotland would get about 90% of it. If divided by population they would only get 9%. So the number will fall somewhere between those two.

Traditionally, international agreements tend to be worked out based on the physical location of the resource but, as with so much else in this situation, there is no way to know how, exactly, things will work out and how the oil will be divided.
