James is winding me a set of pups for my tele. He asked what I was after, I told him

    This

He said he could do that! I am super excited. Right now I have cheap GFS pups in my tele, I can not wait to drop them in once they get here!!

I'm going to thin my lacquer for the bobbins with moonshine. You know, for a little extra twang. ;)

RW Tele pickups are second to none. I have a set from a couple years back in my main Tele, a Ron Kirn build.

I asked James to make em great for rock'n'roll, mine sound like BLOOD&THUNDER but I can easily dial in the twang.

You will not be disappointed. :dude:

    They can ship Tuesday. :h5:

They are essentially ready to go now (coils just got wound in a batch tonight). I could ship Monday but I have a new toy arriving Monday and might want to use it on these, depending on how it works out. It'll be worthwhile, knowing your fancy for fuzz, if said new gizmo works as it should.

That's all very vague, isn't it? Sorry. I'll make up for my vagueness with photos, and perhaps even video, once it all goes down.

Made a new tool for inserting the thinner 60's/70's magnets straightly into the flatwork.

These Fender style bobbins are about ready for a nitro lacquer dip.

...and this mason jar of aged nitro is ready for action!

This set got machine wound for the CBS sound. Here's a little slow mo...

This photo shows (in a somewhat exaggerated way) the slight green/yellow shade left over the black forbon by the aged nitro dip.

You can see it a bit on the bottoms of the magnets here, as well as the distinctive masking line across the flatwork, showing where the eyelets were masked off during the nitro dip.

A shot of the naked coils before getting covered and wrapped. You can also see my staggered radius pattern with the magnet lengths and the hand-chamfered magnets (modern machined chamfered magnets are often too severe and always too consistent. The originals had a particular look, which included a bit of uniqueness from one magnet's chamfer to the next. I get a bit obsessed, at times.

...speaking of getting obsessed, I have never found an American-made twine that is the right thickness and twist to look like the originals. I can get some imported stuff that looks right, but why have one imported little part when the rest is domestic? Something about non-American Tele pickups just seems wrong when there's no need for it. ...so I buy this American stuff, stretch it across the room, untwist it with a drill, pull a few strands out, and re-twist it with the drill. I know that's a little crazy, but it feels right to me and I'm proud of it.

A little masking tape before installing the copper plated steel elevator plate. The bobbin is lacquered over the poles but it is vintage nitro that could eventually become brittle and flake off. The tape is also period-correct so win/win. Wax will also get in there and isolate everything during the potting process tomorrow.

    Old skool grounding.

That's all for now but there IS more to come!
