Somebody gave me a neglected, almost left for dead 2007 Squier Tele which had some parts missing. I have been bringing back to life with whatever bits and pieces I had at hand. It is almost functional now and I have left the relic look intact as I prefer guitars that look and feel used anyway.

    Two problems:

    - The guitar hums through some amps and not others. The type of hum that goes away when you touch metal parts (e.g. strings). Some amps hum like mad and others don't. Why could that be?
    - There's no continuity between neck metal cover and pot casings. Is this normal. I always thought tele neck cases were connected to earth... could that be the reason for the ghost hum?

I would start there. Make sure all the pot cases are grounded and the bridge plate.

Make sure your jack is wired properly and not reversed.

You didn't say if it hums in both pup positions or favors one or the other..

See if the neck cover is grounded with the coil ground and make sure that they aren't reversed.

This would make the neck cover hot...

Hum is the same when using any of the pickup switch combination....
Neck pickup was quite battered when I got it. only 2 wires as well.

Still sounds like the hot and ground are backward on the jack...

Or the ground is floating and unhooked from the rest of the guitar.

    :photos: would help, obviously...

The ground wire is supposed to go under the bridge plate not the neck plate.

    Good news and bad news.
    Good news: hum is gone.
Bad news: my beautiful jtm45 clone is responsible for the hum. tried today with a different guitar and it hums too until I become earth by touching strings.... :(

How is the power in your home? I found recently that if it has rained recently - say a few days anyway - I get WAY more hum from my amps and guitars. If it's been dry for several days the signals are all much quieter.

My gear is also dead quiet at my buddy's house where we rehearse, regardless of weather. So you might take the amp and a couple guitars elsewhere and see what happens.
