Real checking = real checking, vintage or not.
My 2001 stratocaster has started checking on several places but it doesnt have enough checking yet to deserve a place in this thread :thumb:

I've thought about that, but look at how outrageous the checking can be on Gold Tops. Maybe it's more about adding the metal flake to the mix? I'm not sure.

Maple tops will check, for sure. I have refinished Les Pauls and freezer checked them no problem.

Hi all. First post here, long time lurker. Completed this build last month using the most brittle lacquer I could find. Started checking before I rubbed out the finish. Check it out;-)

And on the occasions where Bursts DO check, here's a good one.

That's a Gretsch knob, usually for the felt mute. It's apparently Ted Nuget's '59.

This is just a sneak peek of my "new" 1972.
Also coming is a 1973 that's in opposite stupid clean condition.
I'll be calling them "Oscar & Felix."
Stay tuned, they'll be posted in the Norlin section soon.

    Yeah, downsizing...right.

My '79 has the same amount of yellowing on some spots. Previous owner didnt like that much I guess, he sanded / buffed most of the yellowed laquer from the binding, its white in most spots now :(

Can anyone try and explain to me why I see like 99% of checking is always vertical on a les Paul but my black 95' standard the checking runs horizontally? I'll post a couple pics.
