There's a video with Tom Doyle (Les Paul's long term tech) where he stated that he and Les shaved the neck down on Les' LP until Les noticed a difference and measured as they shaved. Les stated the tone was negatively impacted below .86" and from that point on .86" became his preferred measurement.

I know thare are many players out there that can 'hear' what most players don't notice. I think Les falls into that camp.

I started measuring my necks after on line buying became prevalent in the early '00s. I found my personal favorite size at .86" at the first long before I'd read about Les' tonal discovery.

It took me til 2012 to find an LP at .86" at the first. That guitar was my DCHP which had a neck shape based on Dave's personal '59. Other than signature runs and the DCHPs it's almost impossible to find that measurement on any off the rack Historic.

I have to admit that this is one the most useful threads that the OP posted. :D

Actually, I guess the main reason I am thinking about a slimmer neck is because I have a wrist problem. The thing is, my hand gets fatigued after some playing, and the reason is the tension. I feel tension in my wrist in some positions, and it seems to me that that's because the neck feels too fat in those positions. I'm more into playing rhythm riffs, so I spend a lot of time on the upper side of the fretboard (lower E) as opposed to soloing on the lower one. Therefore the thumb over the top of the fretboard (for which a fat neck is ideal, I suppose) is not really applicable to my case. To use a well-known example, my hand doesn't feel well playing things like the main Master Of Puppets riff.

I'm not in a rush to get a slim neck, though. I see what you mean about a slim neck. Plus, I had an ESP guitar with a very slim neck, and even though it was fine (that was long time ago), I actually felt like it just doesn't feel nice in my hand.

3-4 months. But I've owned Les Pauls with even slightly fatter necks for 5-6 years.

Ok, guys, I see what you mean about actually trying guitars and not just asking questions. From my experience, I have to spend at least several days with a guitar to really figure out if I like it feel-wise. But I guess there is no other way.

Perhaps you don't need a new guitar but need to learn better technique. Try adjusting your strap and playing the guitar higher or lower. You may be surprised at how much of an effect that can have upon your technique.

I've thought about offering the mgr $3,000 but I don't think he'd take it.

That ebony Custom they've hsd forever is still there, similarly overpriced

5 or 6 years ago that El Paso store was a decent place with a platinum room and fairly cool people working there. Since the R0 debacle I have only been there once and forced a crazy deal on a R9. I don't think they want me back....

I know, right? It WAS pretty nice. That platinum room is no more, but I think the ebony Custom that was in that room is the one I mentioned.
