Stopped by a GC today and checked out a R8 and a G0 that they've had for about a month or so. I compared them side by side for finish and feel. Liked the finish on the G0 which I was told was Lightburst by a decent salesperson who seemed to know his stuff.

What are the main production differences in these two models besides finish and volume/tone pots? I'm guessing the neck's going to be a little thicker on the R8?

    Thanks,

Thanks, that actually does help. I'm trying to figure out if it's lower end Gibson in conjunction with most of the low to mid end stuff GC specializes in or if it's on par with the other reissues. Man, I just loved that finish though and it played like a champ.

GC runs Gibson, I don't see why it would be of lower quality.
You've also answered your own question.
    You've found your guitar !
GO buy that Bad boy and show it to us. I think the going rate was around $2100.00 New. Maybe less . Guys ?

They had a tag on it for $3099 whereas the R8 VOS next to it was $2999. Not sure why there would be that small of a difference... anyway.

I've gotten to know a couple of guys down there since, one of which knows his stuff about Gibsons. This G0's been sitting there for a month or more. Just a couple of slight scratches/belt rash on the bottom between the pots and the cutaway, but nothing that wouldn't occur with regular playing.

Also, the fretboard is unique in that the rosewood has some variation in color, kind of like from light chocolate to dark chocolate, however the finish is just as smooth as any other I've felt. Is this a bad trait or just unique.

Finally, if I tried to lowball them just so they could move inventory, and based on the slight wear described above, how low do you think I could get them?

Last year, I'm pretty sure $2200.00.
I wish some guys would chime in.
Especially with those problems you've mentioned, even lower.
Ask for the Store manager wave cash and start to walk out.
    See what happens. ;)

I had a GC R0 for a while and it was one of the best Les Pauls that I've ever owned.Really nice neck on those guitars and the color is cool too.

If anyone had a R8 with mild figure...I'l swap it for my R9!!

R8's have better necks..most R9s I have played have thinish necks!

    I like them massive!!

Gotta agree with you there. I love the neck of the '58 and frankly it'd be my first choice with that baseball bat sized thing! But man I just fell in love with that G0 after playing it. The Lightburst finish kind of reminds me of your '59 minus the flame. Very vintage or "unburst" looking.

BTW listened to you from the Beeb. Awesome as usual. I passed your band's link on to some buddies and they thought it was great stuff :applause:

(my 04 has the bees/cts pots nonetheless)

...unless neck size is a deciding factor...I personally would opt for the R8...
