"Everybody has to suck at first"- - J.W.

Any horror stories about the first or worst time YOu chocked live? The song, a solo, the venue?

First gig was DISASTER. We sucked, and then sucked.
Junior High dance. Every kid was there.
    They hated us.
We ran out of stuff in about 40 minutes.
Bass player came up with, "We had a request to play everything again!" So we did.
We had dance-able treats like "War Pigs," "Bastille Day"; a horrible "Stairway," and a few more.
Oh my garsh. We were promised 90 bucks, I think we got 45, and did not deserve that.
Kids just stared at us, and talked to each other.

May not be worth posting here...

Had not been playing very long in my first band. An early "public" performance was a basement gig of sorts for the birthday party for the drummer's squeeze. Pretty good turnout - it was fairly packed for a basement.

I was good enough with chords, but lead work needed work. When doesn't it? Every time I started one, some douchenozzle would roll the eyes and shake head no indicating he no like. Made me a sad panda. I got over it, but still remember it.

On my first outting, about 30 hot girls threw their bras at me, but only maybe 25 came back to my suite at the Waldorf after the show.

Life’s a bitch, but it can also be a bitch.

Thanks! Back then it was a big deal that I got over. Had not played in front of many people and was the shy sensitive type I suppose. Turned dark and brooding shortly thereafter.

In retrospect I thought I could have stopped and handed him the guitar: "Here you do it better!", but the show must go on. I thought I knew most of the guitar players in school and he was not one of them.

That sort of thing never happened again. Eventually, I'm all but positive my guitar playing got me laid. :D Such great memories ...

First paying gig...an Ice House off the Southwest freeway in Houston. We don't have a clue about mic'ing our amps, I've got my Boogie turned up loud so I can hear it, no stage monitors and I've had several shots of courage before we get on stage. I'm supposed to sing harmonies and backup and I can't hear me at all.

Things are going as well as can be expected and then we break into 867-5309 for our last song of the first set. I'm getting into it...maybe a little too much. As soon as the song is over, I see a hottie sauntering up towards the stage...she's looking right at me and when she gets close she motions me down to listen to her...she says "you shouldn't sing".

That was over 25 years ago...I no longer sing, even in the shower, and I have performance anxiety.

One of the songs we played in that early band was "Rocky Mountain Way". I have no doubt I (we) did suck. No Voice Box, no slide. Used a Cry Baby and did have me Les Paul then … and a Big Muff Pi now that I think about it.

Our band practice for a year so we wouldn’t suck. We did our first gig at New Years party.... most were piss drunk and they still could recognized that we sucked.

We played LZs Rock-n-Roll start to finish in 1 minute and 22 seconds.. We played through our set in half the time with extended guitar solos and a unplanned drum solo... as if we were on meth.

I suck too. I would suck a lot less if I played more. Been at it off and on for over 42 years, more off than on. It is what it is and am glad I still have my Les Paul. I know a lot of people in my off / on situation may have sold it off.

I play more acoustic these days. Such a pure form of playing. Volume, tone controls are my hands and pick choices. Never learned how to finger pick. Old dog, new trick.

I never really choked or horribly screwed up too bad. Just the usual odd stuff like the singer steps on the tuner pedal and mutes you, and you scramble for a second to figure out what happened.

Did play a venue once that smelled like a sewer,..that was pretty gross.

    ..gig's a gig. "the check cleared." :laugh2:
