I, like Eric, am pretty certain that, that is indeed Bolan's LP. Note the figuring that goes through the control knobs (the dark lines seen in most of the pics of him playing it).

Don't have the time to get into the level of photographic analysis, that I did in the "Peter Frampton LPC" thread, but these kinds of things are too specific to be coincidence.

    So, that being said, congrats!

    Btw, :wow:

Look at the grain just above the neck volume knob.

    many questions are coming up...

    - is it originally a burst?
    - stolen? then who will be jailed?
    - so, how much?

This might be a really messed with 50's Les Paul that has been badly renecked, or an old replica.

It seems worth taking it to an expert to figure it out. If it's an old replica it's worth the value of the vintage parts and a few hundred more. If it's a messed with 50's Les Paul it's worth a heck of a lot more. If that's the case then it's worth getting it properly renecked by a restoration expert.

Fascinating. Wes Montgomery, Frampton, Lennon's J-45E, Bolen's LP....I love seeing them all pop up. I remember a guy out here in Chicago burbs back in the 70s that supposedly "had Lennon's stolen Madison Sq. Ric 325"...wonder if that will show up?

    Then what? Beano?

I understand that, Read a bunch about it...

My lousy attempt at being funny:slap:

Wasn't the last type neck on it when MB owned the guitar(Before it was stolen) was a Custom type?

Was the 4th reneck an attempt to hide it identity of the guitar back in the late 70's after it was pinched?

Im not sold Eric. Looking at your two best comp pictures I see a dark grain heading north from the neck volume knob. On the Bolan photo you can distinctly see two lines, on the OP's its a single dark streak.

I just don't think its the same guitar, and believe me, I want it to be the same guitar!

The photographic evidence is enough the say that it is MB's guitar. So, the best thing to do would be to leave it alone.

Considering the guitars history/provenance, it can be considered one of the few real "Holy-grail" LPs, regardless of it's condition.

Organic substances (abalone, wood grain) don't lie.

Well this thread took an interesting turn since I last looked. I didn't give the body much credence because of the iffy neck, but now I think different.

On-line photos are usually copies of copies, and sometimes scans of magazines photos.

Add to that, we are comparing photos of a guitar separated by 40 YEARS.....don't expect everything to look exactly the same. Given it has been re-necked since the photo...it could also have been painted again too.

As a stolen guitar it's way too obvious to leave the black 70's Custom neck on it. Perfect replacement is a standard neck with no serial.

The OP needs to take the guitar outside in the sunlight and shoot in a a manner so as to make the the birdseye grain in between, and to the left of the pickups, show up.

I think Im ready to admit I might be wrong Eric. Look at the greyish line that runs under the bridge controls on the OPs guitar. Look above.

It's only 21 miles from the UK to France. In Texas they've got to go that far to piss over the garden fence.:thumb:
