    <---- "Who" was influenced.

    Who's next? :hmm:

How'd the thread go from PT-like guitars to "Who defends the honor of The Who"? :)

I thought I liked The Who back in the day. Then I saw them on the TV. Pete jumping around and all that. Then smashing a Gibson guitar !! I dint think He looked cool at all. I couldn't afford a real Gibson then. Kinda ruined it for me.
I know other players smashed up guitars also. Just something about him doing it made me angry.
If a who song plays on the radio....I change the station!

I am totally old school, in that i only recognize Jimi Hendrix as breaking totally new ground with a guitar in that era.
Like his music or not, to me he changed the way the electric guitar and what you could do with it was perceived.

Of course, as i said before, every major band back then (and probably some minor ones as well) has made contributions to the evolution of music (and in those days pretty much every new technique/sound was a new contribution because there was so much unexplored musical territory) but they were sort of "collective" contributions, i.e. multiple small advances over time that cannot be attributed to single bands or individuals, but that changed rock music dramatically from some time in the mid 60's into the early 70's where a lot of foundations were laid for the future to develop on...

I'll definitely concede that point. In fact, I'd be willing to say there are only three guitarists in that group
    - Chuck Berry
    - Jimi Hendrix
    - Van Halen

Each changed what the electric guitar was going to be in rock music. WIth each, you can draw a line----- what rock guitar was before them, what it was after them.

Each had influences, but were definitely "new"

Most every other rock guitarist is derivative of one of these guys, or the many blues-men who came before them.

Now for the fun part for me in the debate.....
Yes. His name was Jimi Hendrix.

Head to the library of your "old school" and read up on the competition between The Who and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Jimi had a stage show of destructive antics and feedback/distortion that was directly influenced by The Who.

The battle went on through to the Monterey Pop Festival. That show is what elevated Jimi to superstar status. The guitar burning is iconic.

The guitar burning happened because Jimi had to follow The Who. Jimi had been "ripping off" Townshend's act up to that point, but now had to share the stage with The Who.

There was a coin-toss to see who went first.

Whoever went first was going to have this huge platform to launch the band to stardom (as the one who followed was going to be seen as a copy-cat).

The Who won the toss. Pete played loud, and was destructive.

Jimi followed. And had to up the game.

This is a good read. Read the whole thing, not just what I quote below:

Pete Townshend Vs Jimi Hendrix: The Who Backstage At Monterey | MOJO

    What Pete later said:
Pete Townshend Recalls Negotiating with Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival

Hendrix: the superior guitarist without a doubt in anyone's mind.

Did Jimi want to play like Pete? No.

Was he influenced by Pete Townshend? Absolutely.

    Agreed, yes :)

As for the other stuff, yeah, they probably stole from each others acts - after all, talent borrows, genius steals - but what i first reacted to was that that The Who were talked about as having a decidedly musical influence on rock music.

I am not going to deny that they were probably a band that were influential in making the public concept of rock stardom what it (still) is today, but again, my comment was mostly about their contributions to the actual music, which to the best of my beliefs are not greater than any of the other huge bands from that era.

    I don't get you?

This is an open discussion forum, on the internet, no less.
Of course you will be subjected to opinions (as that is pretty much what internet fora have to offer), and yes, even opinions that differ from your own  !!!

But as long as no one claims that their opinion should be the truth for every one else, why should you care, other than perhaps to voice your own opinion and while away a bit of time with more or less pointless discussion?
