I posted this vid before, but to me these handwound pickups by Gil show that you don't necessarily need an old winding machine to get to PAF tone.

Agree, the old winding machine story is just a sales & marketing pitch...........to add to the vibe.

Sheptone Tributes don't use an old Leesona winding machine & they sound killer. :D

    Hey Dave.

Do the UK winders use 50s p 90 mags as a way to achieve this clear all most single coil tone you speak of? :hmm:

Vintage magnets don't have a huge amount to do with PAF tone. The main thing they do is that they are very WEAK magnets. This does certain things and I copy this effect in my work. Vintage P90 magnets are the same as PAF's used, BUT really early P90's sometimes had alnico 3 magnets in them, and I've seen NO evidence of alnico 3 showing up in PAF's, from personal experience. Dealers on Ebay often pull old magnets out of P90's and claim they are PAF magnets, well they ARE, but they are also ripping you off if you dont mind paying $200 for an old magnet ;-)

PAF tone is complicated beyond belief, they were simple pickups, but nothing in them is the same as whats being made now. Recreating them is a long and difficult effort in translating old materials into modern and making them work the way the old stuff did. You can never really copy any old 60 year old pickup, but you can get damn close if you have the drive and obsession to spend 9 years or more on one subject like I did.

    This sounds GREAT! :applause:

    May I ask if this is a JTM45 or a JTM45/100 head?

Original Greenbacks in the 4x12 or G12H30's?

Are these pickups available for sale?

    Thanks! :thumb:
