I would like to have just one guitar with a vibrato/wang bar/wiggly stick and don't want to put a lot into it. I'm thinking $600 CDN, max.

First off: It won't be any version of a Strat; Squier or otherwise. Iconic or not, Strats just don't do it for me. There isn't much out there that isn't Strat shaped or, worse, pointy Strat-shaped.

    What I've liked so far:
1: Squier Vintage Modified Mustang. Oddly, the Fender version is a hard tail $400-410
2: Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster or the J. Mascis version $540-600-something
3: Used PRS SE Custom 24, available locally for $425 CDN
4: I almost like the Kramer Barretta Special. Strat based but quite plain and only $259, but that head stock...
5: Have you seen a Travelcaster? It's not much more than the pickguard and neck of a Strat without the body. $395
6: Ibanez Tallman w/Tremolo has a Strat layout but a Tele/Jazz blend on the body. $600

    Hit the pawnshops.

I always see lots of nice Ibanez guitars.

Ibanez makes lots of pointy guitars, but I'll do a search on their other models and see the price ranges. Maybe there's a Talman or higher priced model that someone wants gone.

My vote for the Travelcaster, then PRS SE Custom 24.

Although the Travelcaster is shaped like a Strat pickguard, I thought it was kinda cool. The PRS is the only one on the list that I can walk down and buy tomorrow, if I want it.

Tele with a bigsby, or one of the rondo knockoffs with a tele body and a strat term.

as far as Squiers go, I'm not too sure any of their non-Strat tremolos are worth a damn. Of those options, I guess I'd say the Kramer  If you don't mind the single pickup (or headstock) the lower price point leaves lots of room for upgrades (or other stuff entirely)

    The PRSs are nice too

I had a look at the PRS. Everything looks good and the set up is good. The vibrato works well. There is a ding on the back edge about a cm square and there is no gig bag, but not bad for $425. I checked the serial code online; it's a 2009. Seriously considering it. I can bring a gig bag from home to transport it.

I don't know if I can trust a man that can't get on with a Strat.

    :hmm:

600 CDN is a guideline but I've spent a shit load of money since Boxing Day; a guitar, a bass, a camera and eight pedals.

Ibanez also made an "artist" series doublecut les paul with symmetrical pointy horns..........possibly even with a tremolo.

I also wouldn't be surprised if some manufacturer made a double cut similar to pat traver's famous les paul double cut with kahler trem.

Ok, silly question..... What kind of trem? Strat styled? Bigsby? Floyd?
Looking at a hollow or semi hollow? The Gretsch Streamliner, the 2622T is a great guitar, that you should find used for around the 600Cdn mark. Ibanez, makes a crap load of hollow, semi's, and solids with different types of trems. ( I recently picked up a SAS32FM, double cut, set neck, Wilkenson type trem, 2 hums coil tapped to have a stacked single, [Yes, 3 coil humbuckers] ) All for the low price of..... 125 USD used! Check your local Craigslist.

Solid body with stock trem, nothing fancy or locking. There isn't much local to me, and it's not a good idea to buy off Kijiji unless you can see the item. I don't mind buying from a dealer.

Ok.... so what's a STOCK trem? A strat style, or a Bigsby or one of it's many derivatives? I assumed CDN was Canadian. So check eBay.

Whatever the trem is that comes on the guitar, but not Floyd or Schaller. IE A PRS with their own trem, or a Fender with their own trem, except no Strats.

That's not bad at all. I wondered about just putting a Bigsby on my '13 '50s Tribute, but all Long & McQuade seems to have is Vibramates, no Bigsbys.
