Slightly unsatisfied by my SD-1, I was off to Guitar Center this weekend. I decided to pit the SD-1 against a Soul Food, and just for fun since it was also on sale, the legendary Tube Screamer. They also had a BD-2.

As I suspected, the SD-1 just did not have enough of a boost. Was pleasantly surprised by the BD-2, but found it a little bassy, and was worried it would be useless to boost a gain channel. Also as expected, the Soul Food was totally transparent.

Ultimately I went for the Tube Screamer. It brought the mids I was missing. Putting it in front of the DC-5 on the regular scooped EQ settings, it pulled everything together.

Talk about POWER..they were running hard that night!!!
Listen to how Brian has to really almost yell over the roar.
One of my ALL TIME favorite bands, ever.

I have no idea what a DC-5 is, but if you are using the settings above, I approve. Level up, drive down. I would run the tone knob lower, but it sounds like that may be where you like it (IME the tone knob is the mid boost, tone on zero is no boost).

I have a Maxon OD808, and while fairly unremarkable, it does exactly the job it is supposed to do. :yesway:

They were "poppy" but very cool. I like the Desolation Blvd album. Gem from the past.

I have 2...and have been playing them a couple years now.

Its a great pedal...and a finicky pedal to set up.I say this, because sometimes i have it set and it sounds too compressed for my tastes. Back it off, change the guitars volume, maybe fiddle with the amp, and voila, its all there(dynamics), with great drive. Its really reacts to the guitars volume settings, and not in a linear fashion!...so i strive to set it to maintain dynamic range., and avoid compressed too much. Its all there in that magic circuit.

Never owned one, or played one, but the 808 is like a Phase 90. You might not need one, but you can make it work with your rig.

Yep, everybody likes SD-1s and Tube Screamers. That's why there are approx 7,459,323,870 of them out there. Good luck dialing yours in.

everyone needs a TS type pedal (or SD-1)... level up, drive down, tone to match your taste... in fact, IDK why someone doesn't make a 1 knob Tube screamer.. just the tone knob :)

Good choice! I modded my TS9 to 808 specs and really enjoy the way it sounds. Have both the Soul F and SD-1 but they dont have that nice mid punch the TS have.
