Passed by a local Montreal pawnshop today and saw a beat up Gibson " The Paul" in the front window.

Went in to have a closer look and saw that the bridge pup was a Duncan and that it was wired with one volume and tone knob only . Three big gaping holes where the original pots and switch were.

Frets were shot and guitar was a player grade condition with no case but they were still asking.......wait for it.......

    .......$2000.00 plus tax!

Fellow would not budge when it told him what it was really worth even after I showed him ebay completed sales.

Told me that it was a late 50's "one off" Gibson that was only going to go up in value???

    LMAO!

They'll figure it out eventually -- hopefully, before some sucker forks over 2K because of the same delusion. It really is too bad that the days of "project" and restoration/fixup wrecks, for cheap, are over. Seems like everyone thinks that their beater is Pearly Gates in disguise.

Used to be Pawnshops had great deals and in some cases didn't know what they really had.
Nowadays, they're asking too much for too many items.
Many are playing the "Les Paul Hype" where every Les Paul ever made is the Holy Grail.
I have stopped walking in years ago due to unrealistic asking prices.
Only good deal a friend of mine spotted, the Custom didn't have a case...
probably stolen. So no go for us.

I had one of those in 1979 as a christmas gift, i think my dad paid $225 with a hard case. Ebony fretboard, jumbo frets, awesome pickups, and grover tuners. I traded it later (straight across) for a solid ash three tone burst Fender Tele that my dad loved so we could share playing the same guitar. It put a smile on his face I will not forget.:D

    Firebrand.jpg

I Liked my Firebrand so much I kept it! I bought it used in 1981 for $425 with a Peavey Pacer amp.
I Recently added a pick guard, replaced the Nashville (original was bent), and pickups with
Dimarzios (popular at the time) as the one of the original T-tops died. maybe my kids can get 2k for it when I die

Pawn shops are yet another thing destroyed by the Internet. Before the web, desperate people with drug problems would pawn awesome gear for absolute peanuts, and even with a healthy shop markup a savvy buyer could come along and still get a great deal. Now, every schmuck in the equation is Googling "Les Paul," seeing the price figures on totally unrelated instruments and getting delusions of even crummy models being lottery tickets.

I took for granted how great it was to walk into a pawn shop, spot a kick-ass axe gathering dust in some corner, and the tag just said "Electric Guitar - $250." Those days are long gone now.
