In my many years of experience :), I find pancaked guitars sound best in those syrupy, love songs. You know the type - they play like butter, and the notes stick to you.

Should I turn off the light on my way out?

In my experience, I've heard more complaints about dark Norlins than bright ones, owing to the low resistance pots Gibson was installing in the 70's. The value of the pots (especially volume pot) has a huge impact on tone and relative brightness or darkness. 100k pots are not unusual in that era, and I've seen them as low as 88k.

But here again, the perceptions based on the sound of the guitars of that period were not the fault of the wood or the construction. They were the choice of electronics installed.

For all we know Norlin got a deal on a sh!t ton load of them lower value pots and bought them all up to save a buck or two. They have never shown that they gave a rat's patoot about the impact on the sound or the player's reaction to the changes... Just get them out the door.

This tendency to buy big and cheap for 'close enough' is not unique to the Norlin era Gibsons either! ALL factories will do it when they can.

Its simple economics. If you can lower the cost of goods, you can improve the profit at the end if all things remain equal. :thumb:

Ford did it on the 'gasp!' Pinto remember?
They removed the drain valve from the lower tank of the radiator to save 2 bucks per car. That adds up!

Never mind a new product line was born and garages and homeowners had to buy the newly designed siphon pump to change the coolant! :squint:

That wasn't Ford's problem or cost! They made 2 dollars more per car instantly!

Exactly...the electronics. I don't find T-tops to be dark when coupled with 300k or 500k pots. I find them very well-balanced with higher value pots, and they have a bit more compression compared to Shaws (which I also really like). They sound great in my '77 Custom.

Not sure what their motives were; profit surely could have been a consideration given the financial straights Gibson was in and the need of their Corporate Acquirer to get return on their investment. Thinking back to the 70's, the rise in popularity of Duane Allman/southern rock and the "crotch rock" bands (e.g., Foreigner, Bad Company, et al) lent itself to a smoother, less bright timbre that blended well with Marshall-esque overdrive. Les Pauls played a prominent role in those styles of music. Maybe Gibson was catering to that market? Just a guess...

It seems like every LP variation ever made is open to electronic parts swaps to dial in the tone a user wants. Personally, I don't see any obstacles to tweaking a Norlin-era LP to arrive at a personal LP tone; the pancake, maple neck, etc. are hardly problems, and depending on what you want, could be assets. I happen to like mini-hums, and unless someone wants a super-hot overwound PU tone (I sure don't) there's no problem with those units. Maybe I'm not fussy enough, but I just don't get it when I hear that these guitars sound crappy to someone. They don't need to.

I wonder if Alex stole that from Les Paul himself.
