So, a number of years ago I purchased a Greco on a friends recommendation, 1977, likely a EG500 or higher. Had a lovely neck and really sweet sounding pickups, I stupidly traded it against something else and have been longing for one ever since.

Last week i managed to bag one from Japan. Photos were sketchy at best and it was a fair risk on my part, but i loved the colour and it came with a hardcase.

A big box turned up on Saturday (HEAVY box) and i went at it like a kid at Christmas! Popped the case and went about checking it over and straight into the workshop for a strip down.

Specs I can work out are

    Pancake body
Looks like a multi piece maple neck
    Ebony fretboard
    Real MOP inlays
Two piece full thickness maple cap = looks like a tobacco burst
Original pickups and pots (and strings by the look of them) hardwear looks original too.
    No serial number.

So, my guess is is that its a 1974, a very late 74. Pickups i think date it to December 12th 1974, could someone clarify what pickups these are?

Sounds and plays killer after a damn good clean and fret polish. Bridge pickup sounds a little weaker than the neck so ill need to do a bit of messing with pickup heights. Are you sure it's a full thickness two piece maple cap? Those pics make it look very much reminiscent of the plywood topped early Greco's but I guess photos can be misleading because of the angle etc. Pots and pups may have been changed as that soldering doesn't really look factory standard. There's a load of Greco catalogs around so shouldn't be too hard to drill it down to the likely model

Probably mid 70s. Does it have a bolt on neck? That'll help identify whether it is early-mid 70s or mid-late 70s. I'm not familiar with those pot codes, unfortunately, but I'm sure someone here is. It does have pickup routes that are similar to many plywood-topped Grecos... Does the pickup cavity have solid walls just like a Les Paul should have, or can you feel around underneath it?

Thanks, does it have a belly cut? The pup routes made it look like one of the lower end plywood topped ones as they were plain with sycamore tops made to look two piece. As that's not one of those maybe a EG650 or above.

There are catalogs here you could look thru http://brochures.yokochou.com/en_index.html . There can't be many standards with the block inlays and plain topped, as opposed to flamed, so hopfully should be easy to spot especially as the later stuff ,1975?, had serial numbers.

Yeah it has the belly cut. Get what you mean about the pup routes. I'm pretty sure it's an early one, 1974. The only one that's that age with the block inlays and tobacco burst is the EG800.

Yep, everything points to late 74 EG800, the 650's were hollow bodied, they switched to the two hole TRC's in 75 and the belly cut disappeared that year too I think.
