I've been hunting for a Gibson like guitar for a couple of months now (the shape and sound). I've looked at some others like a Paul Reed Smith but didn't like the shape of the neck (the PRS guitars have a tapered neck; starts thin at the head and gets thicker as it gets close to the body). I had it down to a couple of Epiphone guitars and Sunday I stopped in the local place to buy (if they had what I wanted).

I tried out several Epiphone Les Paul's from the Studio to the Standard and Standard II (I think it was labeled) and then a 1960 Tribute and 1960 Tribute Plus. All nice guitars with different capabilities and builds.

From a tone standpoint, it was a toss-up between the Tribute and Tribute Plus. Both sounded really good and I had to switch a few times to really identify the one I liked the sound of. From a fit standpoint, the neck on both were the 1960's style thin neck which is my preference (likely due to the Telecaster and Stratocaster I already have :) ).

The guys in the shop couldn't tell me the difference between the Tribute and the Tribute Plus (it took quite a bit of searching on the 'net to finally figure it out). The only real difference was the Tribute was $850 and the Tribute Plus was priced at $600 with a second one at $800 for some reason. The only apparent difference between the two Tribute Pluses were the colors. The lower priced one was Vintage Sunburst and the higher priced one was a Faded Cherry Sunburst (a bright orangish almost to the edge of the guitar body).

I went with the Vintage Sunburst at the $600 price (total $650 with taxes and a Cream TAB book).

After checking the 'net, the only difference between the Tribute Plus and the Tribute seems to be Mother of Pearl inlays vs Pearloid on the Plus, thicker frets, and top hat knobs vs speed knobs on the Plus. I also found that the Plus had increased in price. The tag on the one I bought listed the old MSRP of $999. The second Plus had an MSRP of $1399. Apparently Gibson increased the prices on the Plus and I caught the store between price changes (and apparently the 'net as they're still listed at $599 in many places). So I made out a little on the guitar.

I'm not a heavy poster but I will be lurking for a bit to learn more about my new guitar and if there's anything else interesting going on :)

Good choice, I have one and just love it. The more I play it the more I like it. The electronics are identical to the 2010 Tribute so they really should sound the same. The only differences that I can see are all cosmetic. The big factor here is the Tribute Plus is a much better value. Congrats, HNGD, enjoy!

I have the Pro/FX version with the Floyd and it's most definitely one of my favorites, even above my 2 Gibsons.
