Thanks to mfolet, this became mine today and it's true: the 2017 historics are incredible. I have a milestone birthday coming up in a few weeks, so this is my present to myself. I always wanted a great Les Paul like this. I love the way it plays and it's pretty.

I turned 50 in 2009 which resulted in my avatar. One of those things you can never justify . . . you just need it well because you just do!

    Nuff said . . .

Now, why are they considered a "plain top"? Doesn't really matter, just curious.

They call plain top everything which is not pure flamey. If they have a flamey slab, but mixed (or faded) with a curly figured and grain, they will probably put it in the plaintop wood pile.

With plaintops like that, who the hell needs a flametop?

If you're happy, we're happy :applause: (well.. I am, anyway.. can't speak for everyone else)
Congrats, brother. Long may you enjoy !
Looks super sweet for sure. Love the color and the top. But I might be a bit partial (my avatar, lol).
I was going to say, now go play it.. But here I am, typing comments on our forum  I should be playing my fiddle.
I need to finish soldering my new wiring though, it's out of electrics for now.
I still need to solder my pickups to the pots, the output jack and the switch connections to the pots.

Damn, I should've said input jack to ruffle some feathers :p

Beautiful Guitar. Gibson needs to call these '58 Flame Tops.

This is not a Plain Top.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I have no idea if something this flamey was even made available in 1958.

But I'm pretty sure I don't care ;) And yes, I actually do play the damn thing even though I find myself staring at it.

It does not matter what the label is. Back in the late 50's most were
Plain to mild Tops anyway. There was a few nice heavy flame tops
in 1958, along with hidden flame beneath the Gold Tops before the
Sunbursts and Standards revealed the real beauty of the flame.
