I decided to finally pull the trigger! Was originally planning on getting an R8 but I got such a good deal on this R9 I couldn't resist. Did my best to get a sunshine shot...

I really get it now that CS guitars are different. It's like they're not even Gibsons but a different brand altogether... Just feels so different compared to my 2013 Standard...

Looks amazing, but you're just going to have to post more pics than that.

Whoa. What is up with all the string dampeners and is that a #%*&ing Fender clip-on tuner on the headstock? Somebody call Social Services - I'd like to report R9 abuse!

    She's ä too nice lol

    Good score!

One question, does the fender sustainer make a big difference for you? I've never used one.

Congrats. Can I ask a question: what is the Velcro on the strings for? I've seen that a few times (maybe rubber bands also?) and have always wondered.

Thanks! This particular guitar has a very pronounced sympathetic resonance causing a lot of vibration and some rattle. It's only audible when playing unplugged but it's enough to irritate me a bit. The fender fat finger dampens the vibrations very effectively and stops the rattle about 90%. The velcro removes another 9%...nothings perfect...

Some people might return a guitar based on this, considering it to be a problem. I'm of the opposite opinion. I believe I've been fortunate in getting some very resonant wood.

The easiest way to test if a fender fat finger helps is to strike an open string and then pinch the end of the headstock between the thumb and index finger of your fingering hand.
If you notice a difference then adding a fat finger will have the same effect. If you don't notice a difference then its not for you.

There may be a slight improvement to sustain. Some people swear its a huge difference. Me, I sometimes think it's all in my head...

Thanks! The velcro (some people use rubber bands, scarfs, whatever works) helps dampen vibration behind the bridge and behind the nut. Some guitars get quite an irritating "noise" as you can get the sound of "extra" open strings behind the nut added to the sound when playing. Test by striking an open string and dampening with your other hand to test if it makes a difference. I do it on all my guitars regardless. Live it's not a big deal but when recording it can make a difference depending on the guitar. You can also use them when recording tapping licks. In that case just put them sort of like a capo at the first fret to quiet the strings you're not playing. On strats you can put them in the tremolo cavity to dampen the springs. Some people say it helps sustain...I'm on the fence on that one...

There's a product by Gruv Gear called fretwrap, but I get the same effect with microphone stand cable ties and they're quite cheap for a 10-pack.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't record or do tapping; explains why I was clueless about this lol

Yeah, that's not helping. I don't see why that's necessary on what appears to be a perfectly fine Les Paul, but if you dig it, enjoy.
