So for my next trick, I'm building a guitar for my bosses bosses boss.

He's a Sr. VP at the company where I work, so I damn well better get this one right, eh? :)

Its gonna look similar to the warmoth photo below.

We'll have a one piece swamp ash body with quilted maple drop top. No pickguard. Direct mounted pickups, faux binding, and a control cavity in the back.

Leaning towards a Seymour Duncan hot rails in the bridge slot, and more vintage single coils for the middle and neck slots.

He is still wavering on hard tail vs tremolo :)

The fretboard will be east indian rosewood with bird inlays like I did in a previous build (shown below).
    Also a 9.5" - 12" compound radius.

Hoping to kick this one off in a week or so. I have all the maple and rosewood in stock, but Hearne doesnt have any swamp ash so I've ordered a couple body blanks on line. One they show up I'll kick off this build thread. See if we can get to actual building right in the first page :)

I dont care if its a tele a strat or a cigar box guitar. You never fail to impress!
But a bolt on strat will be childs play for you now.

Oh please- if I saw a thread with the words "Skyjerk", "Tele", and "build" in the title, I'd just assume you were trolling and keep on scrolling :p

Tele could mean Telephone, Television, Telegraph, or Teletubbies :)

Do a teletubby inspired telecaster in TV yellow with the fret markers in morse code for the fret numbers and call it the hello-caster. Then you have all your bases covered :)

I'd go with the Hot Rails and maybe 2 Classic Strat Stack pickups for some vintage quack, all hum-cancelling. There will be a bump in output when the bridge is selected, but that is sort of the point of using the Hot Rails there.

As a suggestion Chris, I couldn't do without a tremolo on a strat but I use all 5 springs and set the tremolo plate screws so it's on the deck which gives me a subtle tremolo when I want it and it stays in tune forever. Dive bomb tremolo is of course not possible set up like this but I'm no EVH.
Looking forward to seeing your latest beauty.

Well, trem vs no trem will be the call of the person I'm building it for. I like Floyd Rose trems myself. However if he says no trem I'm not gonna complain about making it easier to build :)

That question has been answered. He wants an Original Floyd Rose with a tungsten sustain block :)

It wasn't me. I was looking forward to a simple hard tail. Believe me, I was less than happy when he told me he wanted a Floyd. It started out as a fairly straightforward hardtail Strat, and one by one he eliminated all the things that make it simple.

    At least it's still a bolt-on :)

    Hehe!

Only meant he got the idea from your Phoenix build, not that you sold him on the idea. ;) Ya can't show someone a Caddy and then sell him a Chevy. Unless, of course, you stick to the Contractor's Creed ... upcharges.

But being the boss-of-the-boss-of-your-boss might make it hard to explain why cutting a few holes and twiddling with a few screws would cost much more than screwing on a hardtail. :)

The customer is always right, and will surely be a Happy Puppy! (maybe you shouldn't let him know that a through-neck strat would be seriously )

    :cheers2:

Oh he's always right, but he's also paying for the upgrade :)

Just cuz he's my bosses bosses boss doesn't mean he's getting a free ride :)

He's getting a good deal for sure, though. He's happy with what we negotiated. Part barter, part cash

As far as neck-though, he didn't ask and I didnt offer that it was an available upgrade :)

First parts started arriving today for the build, so I should get to some actual building by next week. In the meantime I had been planning to build a more traditional Strat alongside this one, but rather than a straight-up Strat, and since this thread is about a "different" strat, I decided for my own I'm gonna use my own design.

To be clear, when I call it "my own design" a Stratocaster is the clear and obvious inspiration, but wanted to make it a bit more my own with a different body shape and hopefully the headstock is different enough it can stay off the radar of big mean corporations, so it'll be this baby:

It'll be fairly traditional in construction. Swamp Ash body, bolt-on maple neck and fretboard, although unlike the design shown, it'll have SD Hot Rails pickups. It'll be a hard tail.
Probably also be a fairly traditional tobacco burst as well...
