Did Pete Townsend pack this guitar ?
~I don't blame you for returning it,esp since its new.
Ive never owned a new guitar, (mine go from '56-97)& so many Les pauls ive owned have had neck/heel area cracks, I don't sweat that stuff anymore.

My SG has a similar crack in the finish. In my case I'm sure its just the neck and the body expanding. For what its worth I bought a Carvin from the factory and it had an expansion crack at the neck joint. I like you got a discount for it and they assured me it was just the finish. That was in 1984. Still have it and its had the crap played out of it. Its been bounced around in a trailer, in a trunk, in freezing temps and in heat and it hasn't changed a bit, so I guess they were right.

Hey 2ManyGuitars, I'm lucky like you. I'm in Canada but I'm 25 mins away from a parcel receiving store in the states. I've bought a few that way. Saves the broker fee.

Does your police station or courthouse have an X-Ray machine? If so take it by and have the guys run it through , if no crack appears then get a further discount, if it's cracked under the finish send er back...

I would send it back unless they really give you a steep discount - like 599. If you are like me, keeping it will drive you nuts. The guitar is tainted and it will bug the shit out of you.

oh jeez.....much ado about nothing if you ask me. If people want to return new guitars becuz of cracks like this I don't blame them. But virtually every painted Gibson gets these at some point in their life. Look an an LPC that is years old. Those type finish cracks will be all up and don the neck where the paint goes over the binding. So all this about it getting worse over time...pretty silly.

Twist the neck.....if you see it move it is in the wood...doesn't move it is finish. you have to be a real brute to snap a neck like that.

That is probably true with an older nitro-finished guitar. But on a brand new one?

I think almost half the guitars crack right there, solid bodies as well as flat-tops...

There's too much unknown about the depth of the crack to be safe. When in doubt, ship it out.

Not to beat a dead horse, but IMO the fact that the guitar was an SG is an important factor here. SGs are notorious for breaks at the neck heel.

I would prefer to spend more money for a guitar than having a cracked guitar, don't matter how small is the Crack!

We are kicking a dead horse here, The OP has already returned the guitar for one without a crack in the neck joint. But I suppose the issue remains, what do cracks like this mean for the stability and integrity of the neck joint? Until some luthier or tech comes up with some test better than "twist the neck about and see if it moves (or breaks off)" we'll never know. Sad.

I have a 2011 SG Jr I've been leaving out for the kids to play. Has the same finish crack. Been there for years. Also have a 2005 SG Classic that I bought new in 2005 and it's had the same crack since day one. Hasn't budged in 12 years.

I think I've seen more SGs with that crack than without. :dunno:
