    So the basics...

I'm in Canada and this is a US only model. Zzounds had them new for $1169 and blems for $999. I asked what was considered a blem. They said cosmetic only. Anything into the finish is considered "scratch & dent" and is discounted more heavily. I ordered a blem.

Being in Canada, I had it shipped to the UPS Store just over the border about an hour away. I drove down today to pick it up and the the box was pretty beat up. It turns out it was double boxed with the Gibson box inside this one...

After opening the inner Gibson box, I noticed the bottom of the case was a bit "puckered out" right at the very bottom.

The guitar was perfect except for a finish crack at the neck joint on the treble side (bass side is fine).

I've already called customer service and they said my options are return, exchange or if I determine it's only cosmetic and want to keep it, a further discount. I know exchange seems like a slam-dunk, but I already drove over 2 hours round-trip and don't feel like spending another half day bringing back over the border to ship back, then another round trip to pick up the new one a week later.

    The question...
Does it look like it's only cosmetic and if so, how much of a discount would do it for you?
These were originally $1399, on sale for $1169 and then blem'd down to $999.

Wish I knew. Just got back from a 9 hour road trip to pick it up. I know it was only an hour there and back, but once I'm already over the border, I usually do a fair bit of running around. I'll run it through its paces tomorrow. Zzounds guy said it would take a couple business days for them to get back to me anyway.

I'd return it due to the "finish crack" at the neck heel joint, because we don't know if it is only a finish crack. The neck has obviously had some pretty heavy stress on it, and it is likely the neck joint is weakened. Not something I'd advise taking a chance on.

That crack doesn't look promising, send it back.

Right! I see many posts about so-called "finish cracks" at the neck heel joint. Let's think about this for a minute. The finish wouldn't crack at this joint had moved -- and this joint isn't supposed to move at all. Any movement at this joint creates a a near certainty that the glue joint has moved. And glue joints don't move without damaging the bond.

That *finish* crack is a HUGE unknown.

My buddies Buckethead guitar developed the same crack. Seems to be solid and in the finish. It depends how much it bugs you I guess?

I'd bite the bullet and send it back. Short-term suckage for long-term piece of mind.

Funny enough, last time I went to the US to buy a guitar was 12 years ago to buy a 2005 SG Classic. It had the same crack. Hasn't moved in 12 years but to be fair, it's rarely been played.

I'm in the send it back camp.
    Not one I'd keep personally.

*IF* he knew it was just a finish crack that would apply, but he doesn't.

True enough, never noticed this is a double cut and the crack is fairly open on OP's. Would bug me personally.

Cosmetically, it doesn't bother me. It's on an SG on the treble side so when you're playing, it's underneath where you can't see it. My worry would be if it's structural. I'll take it to a tech tomorrow.

The fact that it's an SG makes it even more of a red flag in my mind.

I love SGs, but I worry about more than others.

    Could just be me.

Send it back for reasons others have stated. A crack in that specific area could be big trouble down the road.

I'd send it back as soon as I opened the box and found an SG in there.
