Lusted after Les Pauls for more than a decade, I'm finally in a financial place where I can make it work without having to go hungry for a few weeks. So, I took the plunge and bought a used 2018 LP Tribute in Honeyburst (you'll note that despite my newfound financial stability, I stayed on the cheaper end of the LP spectrum ;)).

All is good with the guitar. Plays and sounds just as I imagined. I love its look, its feel, and the sort of no-nonsense, stripped-down, Les-Paul-at-its-core vibe that the Tributes give off.

As this is one of the cheaper Pauls, I expected some corners to be cut in the fit and finish department. I didn't, however, expect the Gibson logo to look like it was printed on the headstock with a sh*tty dot matrix printer from the 80s. Exhibit A:

What gives? Is this typical? Anyone out there with a Tribute who wants to share a similar photo, I'd love to compare!

You were supposed to buy used. You run a very high risk with any current Gibson.

What do you mean? It was used. Current model year, but still used. Is this just the kind of quality Gibson is putting out these days?

Maybe the logo is Murphy aged?:)

They are actually silk screened, so a kind of print.

Mine is more or less ok, and you don`t notice anything unless you look really close.

Yeah… yours looks way better! What year? Your nut looks like it was cut more precisely too. Hey, while I'm complaining about stuff… do your pickup rings bow out on the long sides? Not a big deal, but still something I wouldn't expect on a $1000 guitar.

Ah, that explains it.... Silk screening will likely leave some graininess and even some mild distortion in the print depending on the operator, paint, and pressure applied..

A touchy craft, I remember it being a bit difficult to perfect in the old days myself....

    Mine is a 2010.

As for the pickup rings, loosen the corner screws very slightly, that might fix it (if they havent permanently taken on that shape by now).

Not the best print but honestly fine for what it is. If it plays well, start enjoying it!

Mine did on my '82 and it was explained to me on here that the rings Gibson is using don't have the tunnel support around the screw holes underneath to strengthen them.
    Old, flabby ring..
A good member on here hooked me up with a different set of Gibson rings that DO have the strengthening and viola!
    New, better rings!
You may have to do the same thing..

Looks fine to me. It's a printed silkscreen applied by hand on an ultra low-end model.

Some days I don't know why I even log in.....

I'll have to give that a try. I know they sell rings with a curved bottom. Maybe I'll pick up a set of those...

Right on! It does play well, and I have been enjoying it… just thought I'd ask though.

    Interesting… research time!

Sure, a low-end model… but a high-end brand. And considering the other more complex areas where this guitar is very well made, seems just weird that this is where they'd cheap out on build quality.

I have a 2017 Tribute GT, the Gibson logo looks like the second photo, and I have a slight bow-out in the pickup ring in the same area as in the photo but it's not as bad. All in all considering how awesome these Tributes are, I personally would not send yours back. Close though.

The logo looks fine. I'm baffled as to how you think the logo has anything to do with "build quality" or that they "cheaped out" on it. Gibson probably makes next to nothing off of selling a LP for that cheap. I doubt they are going to give you Custom Shop attention to detail on a silkscreen for that price. Regardless, the logo looks FINE.

The 2018s have received positive reviews from just about everyone on here who owns one. Do you really think it's wiser to buy a used one that someone is already flipping for whatever reason? That seems backward to me.

I thought the same thing, till @Kris Ford steered me right on those.

The rings in my pic were generously provided by Kris who also explained that Gibby rings are not curved but flat. They bend to the curve of the top as they are screwed down (gently and evenly).

Don't know if you can see it here, but unscrewed they are flat.
    They curve when tightened...

Knowing Frozone... I was taking it with a bit of purple font.....;)

(OP, purple font implies a bit of sarcasm, or less than serious jibe):)

Thanks. It makes a lot more sense when I read it in my purple voice. :h5:
