Doug Aldrich - Whitesnake - he should be the most popular guitar player on the planet right now.... because he makes the best music
    Tommy Bolin - Deep Purple
    Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits
    Brad Whitford - Aerosmith
    Mick Mars - Motley Crue

David Hidalgo from Los Lobos. No question. Scary versatile, yet totally authentic. Love his phrasing. Love his blues chops. Hurts me deep. Exceptional songwriter and singer. Plays accordion, violin, drums and a number of other instruments with great skill and feeling. A musical renaissance man.

Best thing though, he is humble about all these gifts -- a truly good guy. He goes out of his way to give accolades to his peers and appreciate their talents. That's probably why he is under the radar and underrated (he doesn't spend a ton of time talking about himself) but those attributes just make me appreciate him all the more.

    Steve Hill.
He's an incredible player and puts out the very best shows I've seen in my life.
I saw him play a 30 minute version of Whipping Post last year and it was just pure awesomeness, I'll never forget it.

    Ritchie Blackmore!
Of all his work he did, especially in the early 70`s
He is only credited as the guy who came up with the riff Smoke on the water.

It sounds cheesy to those of us who lived through it too :laugh2: I like some of it now because I get a chuckle out of it.
Some of it was kickass and not(too?) cheesy, like Judas Priest.

Featuring Ian Gillan, one of my favorite, if not my favorite rock singers. He did a great album with Black Sabbath called "Born Again".

Is Prince still under rated as a guitarist? We all know he's a weirdo who wears girls clothes, but it turns out the little bastard is a great guitar player too. If you don't think he's a great guitar player, watch the following video to be cured of that notion:

    I'll second Luther Grosvenor.

I'll nominate Mike Oldfield. Check out the solo starting at about 4:20...

Also, for a guitarist who always plays in the context and support of the song, Brinsley Schwarz.

Oh, and Zal Cleminson of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band

For me, it has to be Alex, for all his work, especially this:

So many of my favorites have already been mentioned, but this guy is unknown outside the guitar community, and that's a goddamned shame ... Audley Freed.
