I have (had) two Les Pauls with P90s and my wife bought me a Firebird for my birthday a few months ago. I really got into the Firebird pickups. So I took my 60s Tribute Gold Top and put some Lollar Mini Humbuckers in it. OH, BOY!!! This is a case where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This guitar came to life like I couldn't believe. Don't get me wrong, I love my P90's. The Gold Top sounded really good with them, plus I've got a LP Junior Deluxe with a pair in it, and that guitar rocks too. But these Lollars really kick some serious hiney! Plugged into my Dr. Z Therapy, I'm sounding like Townsend back in the "Who's Next" era. They're way fuller than I thought they would be. Like good PAFs without any mud at all. The neck pup is the only humbucker I've ever liked playing by itself. You don't hear all that much about Mini Humbuckers, and I really can't understand why. These things ROCK.
Just killer pickups, here's a pic for you all...

I've thought about putting some Gibson minis in my '50s Tribute Gold Top.

you are correct...bought this 72 recently with stock minis and i have posted before what a wake up call it was for hearing a guitar that sounded light years better than my others, made me question all the others i have and have been thinking of some Lollars for a project i started...just need to quit being cheap and buy them......here is the 72 with Gibson embossed minis

I did the same thing to a 2011 60's Tribute Goldtop except I used an old set of Gibson mini's. I just couldn't get along with the P90's that came in it. Love the mini's, just had to lower them further from the strings than usual.

lets just say it in the rotation so its 2 or 3 times a week....i honestly thought i might need to cut it back as it would need a refret sooner than later as i found out with my first FB years back....but this little project got put together with spare parts last night...it kicks ass but the action is too high and too light gauge of strings i put on but i get sound from it was the #1 goal before i sink any money into it.....bought a $30 ebay pup for it just to see how it would sound and play...a 59 national...not bad, it may be worthy of a mini hum ....

Having just gone through one of these, I can assure you there are good ones out there, and it will set the odometer back to 0 for like new playability! Then you get to wear it out again!

yeah i think it is stupid for me to think that as you said it would breathe new life into it when it got to that point....my JB FB epiphone still gets a ton of hard play then a resonator, the 72 GT, then this National was a beater or short cure for gassing for a 50's junior and i told myself i could start swapping pickups in and out easy enough to test drive a handful of variety instead of buying a guitar just for the pups it has in it...that is the game plan this week...who knows..:dunno:

I stuck a Gibson mini hum in the neck position of an ash tele, to go with a Fralin overwound single coil at the bridge. Worked pretty well, but the mini hum had to be set a little on the low side (not too bad tho).

Fralin's pickups are usually very bright, so going with an overwind, or even heavy overwind thickens things a bit, and adds more oomph. Tone wise, a good combination as the mini hum is rather bright for a HB

The Lollar Mini hum is quite balanced, it's bright if you compare it to a full size humbucker but it has a great clear low end and the mids are just right. Cranked they get really ballsy and backed off they sound terrific. Expensive pickups but worth it. I got a great deal on CL for the Gold Top second hand, $575. But then the pickups were almost $400 after tax, shipping, etc.
I was hesitant to do it but man, I'm glad I did. That Gold Top is priceless now.

NICE. I’ve got the Cherry Sunburst version from the same year. ‘72 was the only year they had the embossed pickup covers.

How did you mount the minis? The originals had a mounting bar installed into the bottom of the p/up routing, and the ring screws then attached to / threaded into that bar. I can find the mini p/ups, but where do you get the mounting bars?

    Thanks.

Mine had a universal mount that works for both P90s and Minis. A plate like in the photo above but shaped differently and bigger for both types of pickup.

My Goldie has minis.... Minis and P90s are my favs, with a weaker PAF type close... Not a nuclear pickup fan... I like em spanky...

My old Custom with Ts sounds great too but not as spanky as my mini or PAF Lesters or the P90 Casino...
