The Heritage G12 (75) sounds like a winner according to the details on Avatars website.
Then again the Alnico Blue description sounds fantastic But very pricey at $279 a piece.
clutch check this out. you can take a listen and compare
Awesome link ht-55! I really think I like the crunch, distortion, and the cleans the best in the Alnico Blue. But I was trying to get away from the Vox tone because I've played it for so long. This is killing me.
To my ears many sound the same. I may be tone deaf. I guess I'm just looking for that old school Marshall crunch tone.
greenbacks are that sound -even if i'm bias
here's some inspirational pic's of green back users
EVH uses 20 watt vintage greenbacks.
I think the EVH brand even sells 20 Celestion made EVH speakers (made in China iirc).
What model of greenback do you recommend? There are a few from what I've seen.
I can't recommend anything cause speakers and cabs are so subjective, but i will share some of my findings tho-
I wanted the g12m (25w) originally. I then found out that Marshall only puts the
g12h (30w) in their 1960ahw (that's the cab I really wanted) I went with it.
It also helps that a couple of my guitar heroes just happened to use the same cab and speaker (refer to previous post with pics)
soo that was good nuf 4 me!- key word - "ME" I love the tone it has with
my vintage superlead even my 50 sounds gr8 thru it.
the g12m is in the 1960ax cab its a 100w and would be a gr8 match for your fifty.
its also cheaper then the ahw. so really it comes down to how much you want to spend
and what look your after in a cab. one other option if u want to go with a 2x12 or a single twelve with a greenback if that's what your after-
they will make any combo of spkr/tolex/grille cloth/piping/cab
good luck man!
I have Celestion Vintage 30's in that 2 X 12. They sound good to me and were only $100 each at the time. My AC30 has Greenbacks made in England My 4X12 cab is over 30 years old and it has the G12 80's in it I believe. They all sound similar but the G12 80's might be the smoothest sounding. Also, a closed back cab gives more thump and an open back will give more chime. My 2X12 has an open back.
You could probably buy a cab on the used market for what the speakers alone would cost you if you built your own.
I'm figuring roughly $200 a piece for speakers? I've seen some nice empty 2x12 cabs in the $150/$200 range.
I really like the 1960AHW
What are your guys opinions on the Marshall AVT 4x12. Seen one local for $100 OBO. Not sure what speakers are in it yet.
$100 for a 4X12 Marshall cab is pretty cheap, even for an empty one. You can always replace the speakers if you don't like them.
Yeah. I saw them new on line for $299. I'm guessing the celestion speakers they say come with them online are the Chinese versions? Must be for that cheap. It's a slant cab. Can these cabs all be wired however you want them? I'm thinking if I offer $50 bucks it's a great deal
Scratch that. I think it's made from MDF. Which I've read deadens the tone. I may as well head down to Home Depot and get some 3/4 inch 13 ply Baltic birch and get the tools out and start. I just need a good site for the schematics.
If you have the tools and skills, build one to '68/'69 spec and you will never be sorry.
It won't be particularly cheap, but it will be very good.
The Metroamp forum might be a good place to look for cabinet specs and drawings.
How about a Marshall 1960a made in England 4x12 with celestion greenback 35's. Seller rates it a 7 out of 10 it's missing the Marshall logo on the grill cloth. He's asking $399. I countered at $275 and I'm waiting on a response.
