That is a brilliant question and I'd like to know the precise time when this happened too. :)
Yet, Gibson did make some exceptions and special runs during the maple-neck period such as the LP Heritage Elite models w. hog necks around 1983, the 30th anniversary goldtops 1982-198? and early 59' prehistorics (think this was 1984). However, it wasn't until some point around 1984-1985 they went 100% hog necks on every LP modelĀ“, I think. (not sure about the LP custom, though:rolleyes:).
A precise time would be interesting to know indeed!

Well, the pancake body was phased out in '77, so it might have been around that time.

    --Edit--

Nah, later than that. '82 or '83 maybe? I really don't know!

I've got a 82 Custom with a three-piece maple neck, and it feels solid as a rock! You can actually feel the hardness of the wood, and it is dead on straight. I've read the same opinions from many maple neck LP owners. As far as sound, it's hard for me to compare because my other LPs have many other differences besides the neck. Most people agree that maple necks have a little brighter tone than mahogany, I think I'm with them on that. I believe they're more durable, and I like the hardwood feel.

That makes sense to me. I like the way maple brightens up the mahogany. It's a really good combo for tone IMHO.

Early 80s LPs have maple necks, I'm not sure when they went back to mahogany. I'm curious, why is a mahogany neck so important to you?

I agree with you all the Maple necks have a diff flavour, thats why a Mahog neck is so imprtant to me! I have a 78 with a maple neck that sounds killer, I want to see what a mahog custom would sound like compared to it. I can't afford a 74-75 or any earlier LP Custom so been researching some 80s ones... I want to know when the cut off point is...

Maple necks feel very solid indeed and have a slightly less spongy tone to me... I know thats a very vague term used to describe tone. But the notes do feel more distinct and sharp compared to my LP standards. I have a 78 LP custom and a 80 LP Deluxe both with maple necks and I am a huge fan.

Another thing to factor in is the ebony fingerboard on the Customs, which most agree add a bit of brightness.

My '81 Custom has the 3 pc maple neck.

If I had to describe its character in one word,
    I would say "attack".

my 81 custom, and 86 studio have maple necks. both sound good. pretty balanced sound overall on both of them. they do sound different than mahogany necks though(cut through mix better imo).
